Established specimens generally need none in most of the UK. Young plants benefit from a sheltered spot, and in very exposed or northern gardens it is worth fleecing the central crown during prolonged severe frosts to protect the growing point.

It is slow-growing but can eventually reach 3-10 m tall with a spread of around 2.5-4 m over many years. Expect just 15-30 cm of trunk growth per year, so it stays in scale with most gardens for a long time.

Yes, it makes an excellent container palm for a patio or courtyard for several years. Use a large pot with a loam-based compost and good drainage, water and feed through the growing season, and pot on as it grows to keep it healthy.

It is not listed as toxic to cats or dogs and is generally considered pet-safe. Do take care with the sharp edges of the leaf stalks, which can scratch, but there are no known poisoning concerns.
