The Trachycarpus fortunei, better known as the Chusan palm or windmill palm, is the definitive hardy palm for British gardens and the cornerstone of any exotic planting scheme. Instantly recognisable by its bold, fan-shaped fronds radiating from a slender trunk clothed in coarse, hessian-like fibre, it brings an unmistakable tropical silhouette to a climate where few true palms survive. This is the plant that lets you create a Mediterranean or jungle feel without leaving the resilience of a fully garden-hardy species behind.

What makes Trachycarpus fortunei so prized in the UK is its remarkable cold tolerance. Rated RHS H5, it shrugs off temperatures down to around -15C once established, making it one of the few palms that genuinely thrives outdoors year-round across most of the country. It is evergreen, so the architectural canopy of glossy green fans holds firm through winter, and mature specimens even produce arching sprays of small yellow flowers in early summer followed by blue-black fruits.

How and where to grow

  • Position: full sun to partial shade, ideally sheltered from cold, drying winds that can tatter the leaves.
  • Soil: any fertile, free-draining soil, from chalk to clay, across the full pH range, drainage matters most.
  • Size: slow-growing to an eventual 3-10 m, so it stays in proportion for many years.
  • Hardiness: reliably hardy in the UK, with young crowns worth fleecing in severe frost.

Water regularly through the first couple of summers to establish a strong root system, after which it becomes impressively drought-tolerant. An annual spring mulch and a balanced feed keep the fronds lush and the growth steady. It is equally at home in a large patio container for several seasons, making it a flexible choice for courtyards and smaller plots.

Whether you are searching for Trachycarpus fortunei UK stock or simply the best hardy palm for a focal point, this RHS Award of Garden Merit winner delivers timeless exotic structure. Every plant we supply is nursery-grown, carefully selected for a healthy crown and strong root system, and packed with care to arrive in superb condition.

  • Yes, it is one of the hardiest palms you can grow outdoors in Britain, rated RHS H5 and tolerating roughly -15C once established. It is reliably evergreen in most of the UK, including many colder inland gardens, given a reasonably sheltered position.

  • Established specimens generally need none in most of the UK. Young plants benefit from a sheltered spot, and in very exposed or northern gardens it is worth fleecing the central crown during prolonged severe frosts to protect the growing point.

  • It is slow-growing but can eventually reach 3-10 m tall with a spread of around 2.5-4 m over many years. Expect just 15-30 cm of trunk growth per year, so it stays in scale with most gardens for a long time.

  • Yes, the windmill palm is fully evergreen, holding its distinctive fan-shaped fronds all year round to give structure and an exotic look even in the depths of winter.

  • Yes, it makes an excellent container palm for a patio or courtyard for several years. Use a large pot with a loam-based compost and good drainage, water and feed through the growing season, and pot on as it grows to keep it healthy.

  • It is not listed as toxic to cats or dogs and is generally considered pet-safe. Do take care with the sharp edges of the leaf stalks, which can scratch, but there are no known poisoning concerns.
