Begonia

Begonias are one of the largest and most diverse genera of flowering plants, with over 2,000 species found across tropical and subtropical regions. They are grown primarily for their extraordinary foliage, which ranges from spiralling silver patterns ('Escargot') to polka-dotted cane types (Begonia maculata).

Begonias are divided into several groups including Rex, cane, rhizomatous, and tuberous types. Most indoor varieties are grown for foliage rather than flowers, though many produce delicate blooms as a bonus.

Cane Begonias like Begonia maculata 'Polka Dot' are among the easiest to grow. They tolerate a range of conditions and grow upright, making them straightforward to manage. 'Inca Flame' is another resilient variety with striking foliage.

Rex Begonias like 'Escargot' are slightly more demanding in terms of humidity but rewarding once you get the balance right. Start with a cane type if you are new to Begonias.

Place Begonias in bright indirect light. Most prefer higher humidity, so bathrooms, kitchens, or grouping with other plants works well. Water when the top 2 to 3 cm of compost feels dry, and avoid getting water on the leaves, as this can cause powdery mildew.

Feed every two to four weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser during spring and summer. Remove any dead or damaged leaves promptly. Most Begonias propagate easily from leaf or stem cuttings.

Begonias prefer bright indirect light. Most varieties will tolerate moderate shade, though their colours and patterns are most vivid in brighter conditions. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves, especially on Rex types.

Cane Begonias like Begonia maculata handle a wider range of light levels than Rex varieties. An east-facing window or a spot near a north-facing window works well for most Begonias.

Begonias are considered mildly toxic to cats and dogs. They contain soluble calcium oxalates, concentrated mainly in the roots and tubers. Chewing the plant can cause mouth irritation, drooling, and digestive discomfort.

Leaf drop in Begonias is most commonly caused by overwatering or a sudden change in conditions. If the compost is consistently soggy, the roots may be rotting. Let the top 2 to 3 cm of compost dry between waterings and ensure the pot has good drainage.

Draughts, temperature swings, and very low humidity can also trigger leaf drop. Begonias prefer stable, warm conditions away from open windows and radiators. If you have recently moved or repotted the plant, give it a few weeks to adjust.
