Clumping Bamboo
Fargesia rufa is widely regarded as one of the toughest, most reliable and most garden-worthy of all clumping bamboos. It forms a dense, fountain-like mound of slender canes and fine, abundant evergreen foliage, with characterful orange-red sheaths on the new culms. Hardy, non-invasive and beautifully behaved, it's the bamboo to choose if you want lush evergreen cover with none of the worry.
Fast to establish and naturally bushy right to the ground, fargesia rufa makes an excellent evergreen screen or hedge, a superb specimen in a large pot, and a brilliant way to add an exotic, leafy backdrop to borders. Its arching habit and soft texture bring constant gentle movement to the garden.
How and where to grow it
It thrives in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil, and is tougher and more wind- and cold-tolerant than many bamboos. As with all bamboo, the key to success is moisture: keep it well watered while establishing and never let containers dry out. Because it clumps rather than runs, it needs no root barrier and won't take over.
- Position: full sun to partial shade; very tough and adaptable
- Habit: dense, non-invasive, clump-forming
- Care: keep well watered, especially in pots and while young
Each plant is nursery-grown and hand-selected, ready to bring easy, reliable evergreen screening to your garden.

-
Yes, it makes an excellent container specimen for a patio or balcony. Just keep it consistently watered - bamboos in pots must never be allowed to dry out.
-
Keep it well watered, especially while establishing and in containers, mulch in spring and feed through summer. Thin out any weak or older canes at the base to keep it looking fresh.
