Gohobi ikebana vases, kenzan and aprons

    Ikebana vase and kenzan

The Handmade Ikebana Round Vase is a flat, pebble-shaped ceramic vase with a stone-like finish and an offset round mouth. It comes in Matt Black or Black Gold, and because each piece is made by hand, the shape and finish vary slightly. The low, weighted form suits a single branch or a sparse arrangement.

A kenzan, sometimes called a flower frog, is a weighted base packed with upright pins. Sit it in a shallow bowl or vase, add water and press trimmed stems onto the pins. It works with cut flowers or with foliage from your own plants, such as a frond of asparagus fern or a leaf from one of our Monstera plants.

    Aprons for potting and repotting

The Korean Cotton-Linen Adjustable Apron is 97cm long with deep front pockets and a light waterproof coating, in Olive Green, White or Pink. The Korean-Style Printed Apron is a green print with adjustable neck and waist straps, and the Japanese Washed Denim Apron is 100% cotton canvas with front pockets.

For a repotting gift, pair an apron with a bag of Simply Houseplant potting mix and a new pot from our pots and macrame range.

    Gohobi as a gift

The vase and kenzan suit someone who likes arranging flowers, and they appear in our housewarming gifts and Mother's Day gifts. The aprons suit anyone who spends weekends repotting houseplants.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A kenzan, also called a flower frog, is a weighted metal base packed with upright pins. It is used in Japanese ikebana to hold each stem at the angle you choose.

Place the Gohobi kenzan in a shallow bowl or vase, add water, trim your stems and press them onto the pins. A black rubber surround protects the vessel and stops the kenzan sliding.

The kenzan comes in two sizes. The 3.4 cm size suits single stems and small arrangements, and the 5 cm size suits fuller displays and thicker stems.

A kenzan needs a shallow bowl or vase with a flat base and room for water around the pins. The Handmade Ikebana Round Vase is designed to take a kenzan inside its opening.

Each ikebana vase is made by hand, so the shape, finish and colour vary slightly from piece to piece. The price is for one vase.

There are two finishes. Matt Black is a speckled charcoal, and Black Gold is black with a bronze-gold dusting across the shoulder. Both finishes have the same flat, pebble shape and offset round mouth.

The two cotton-linen aprons have a waterproof coating, so water and compost brush off rather than soaking in. They are the Korean Cotton-Linen Adjustable Apron and the Korean-Style Printed Apron.

The Japanese Washed Denim Apron is 100% cotton canvas with a washed denim finish and no coating listed. It suits the kitchen or the workbench as well as the potting bench.

The olive adjustable apron is the longest at 97cm and has large front pockets for snips and labels. It comes in Olive Green, White or Pink.

The printed apron is 84cm long with adjustable neck and waist straps, and the denim apron is 85cm with front pockets. For other practical presents, see our plant care gifts.

An apron pairs well with a Burgon & Ball watering can or a Kew Gardens hand cream for after the repotting is done.

A vase and kenzan go well with a plant that gives good cut foliage, such as an asparagus fern. For more ideas, see our home accessories.
