Purple is the colour that pulls a border together. It sits between the hot and cool halves of the spectrum, so it bridges reds and blues and stops a mixed scheme from looking busy. Soft lilacs and mauves feel calm and romantic, while deep violets and near-purples add drama and weight.
The plants here flower across the seasons, and purple earns its place next to almost anything. Pair it with silver and white for a cool, elegant look, with yellow or orange for a bold contrast, or with pink for a soft, layered scheme. Most prefer sun or light shade and reward you with a long run of colour.
All grown for UK gardens and sent out well rooted.
Purple is one of the easiest colours to place. Silver foliage and white flowers keep it cool and elegant, yellow and orange give a bold contrast, and pink softens it into a gentle, layered scheme.
Most flower best in sun or light shade, which brings out the strongest colour. A few of the woodland types take more shade. Each plant page lists the aspect it prefers.
Several here bloom for months, especially with deadheading. Mixing early and late varieties keeps purple in the border from spring through autumn.
Very. Bees are strongly drawn to purple and blue flowers, so a purple planting is one of the best ways to bring more of them into the garden.
