Fatsia polycarpa 'Needham's Lace': A cut-leaved form of the Taiwanese fatsia, chosen for its deeply divided, lacy foliage. Where the plain species has broad lobed leaves, this selection cuts them into fine, finger-like segments that catch the light and give a lighter, more delicate look. It is evergreen and keeps its glossy green leaves all year. If you like this look but want a bolder, broader-fingered leaf, compare its sister cultivar Fatsia polycarpa 'Green Fingers'.
Hardiness and seasons: The species is rated RHS H3, so this is a plant for milder gardens or a sheltered corner in colder ones. It grows through the warmer months and flowers late, with rounded heads of creamy-white flowers in autumn into early winter, followed by small black berries. Cold, drying winds are the main risk, so a protected spot helps it look its best.
How and where to grow: It is happy in partial shade or full sun with shelter, on moist but well-drained soil. It is not fussy about soil type, taking chalk, clay, loam or sand at any pH. Given time it makes a bushy shrub of around 2.5 to 4m tall and up to 2.5m wide, though it is easily kept smaller. A shady courtyard, a woodland-edge border or a large pot all suit it.
Getting established and using it: Keep the roots moist while it settles and mulch in spring to hold moisture. Once established it is low effort, needing only the odd tidy. Use it for bold, exotic foliage in shade, as a backdrop to lower planting or as a container specimen near a sheltered door. The berries are ornamental but should not be eaten.
Nursery quality: Grown on outdoors and hardened off, our plants arrive sturdy and ready for a sheltered spot in the garden.
