Black Friday FAQs

Black Friday, as originally an American idea, starts the day after Thanksgiving holiday on the 4th Friday in November. For 2024 Black Friday will happen on the Friday 29th November. We usually have a sale or promotion running for a few days before this date.

Black Friday is a major shopping event that takes place the day after Thanksgiving in the United States, typically the fourth Friday of November. It marks the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season and is characterised by a period of sales and discounts offered by retailers, both in-store and online.

The modern use of the term began in the 1950s in Philadelphia. Police officers used "Black Friday" to describe the chaos that ensued on the day after Thanksgiving, as large crowds of shoppers and tourists flooded the city, causing traffic jams and creating a general sense of disorder.

Retailers later sought to put a more positive spin on the term. One explanation suggests that it refers to the point in the year when stores move from being "in the red" (operating at a loss) to "in the black" (turning a profit), thanks to the boost in sales from holiday shoppers.

Although Black Friday originated in the U.S., it has become increasingly popular in the UK over the past decade. The concept was introduced by American retailers with a presence in the UK, such as Amazon and Walmart (through its subsidiary Asda).

The UK's first significant Black Friday event occurred around 2010, and since then, it has grown into a major shopping day, with many UK retailers offering substantial discounts to attract customers.

Black Friday in the UK typically involves a mix of in-store and online promotions, with some retailers extending the event into a multi-day or even week-long sale. This has led to a shift in shopping patterns, with many consumers planning their holiday purchases around the discounts offered during this period.
