    Watering gifts for houseplant owners

    Indoor watering cans

An indoor watering can with a long, narrow spout puts water on the compost rather than on the leaves or the windowsill. The Burgon & Ball Blush Pink Scalloped Indoor Watering Can is moulded steel with a powder-coated finish and a smooth FSC beech wood handle.

The Mushroom Scalloped Indoor Watering Can is the same can in a mushroom colour. Either one suits a shelf of plants from our easy care houseplants.

    Pepin self-watering ollas

An olla is a porous clay pot that sits in the compost and holds water. The water passes slowly through the clay to the roots, so the plant can draw on it between waterings.

Pepin ollas are handmade by Ana and Vitor in the Leiria region of Portugal, and each one varies slightly in texture and finish. Choose from green, speckled white, the heart or blue and orange. They are useful for anyone who goes away often or forgets to water.

    Choosing a watering gift

A watering can suits someone with lots of plants in one place, and an olla suits someone with a few larger pots or anyone who travels. Pair either with a plant from our houseplants under £10 or a feed from our Plant Care Gifts.

For pots with a built-in reservoir, see our self-watering plant pots.

    Frequently Asked Questions

An olla is a porous clay vessel that sits in the compost and holds water. The water passes slowly through the clay walls to the roots, so the compost stays evenly moist for longer.

The Pepin self-watering ollas are handmade in Portugal and measure 9.5 x 9.5 x 17cm. See the full range in our Pepin collection.

Bury the body of the olla in the compost with the neck above the surface, then fill it with water through the top. Top it up as it empties. The Pepin Self Watering Olla Heart works the same way as the others.

The olla is 17cm tall, so it suits medium and large pots rather than small ones. Check the compost now and then at first to see how quickly the plant uses the water.

A long, narrow spout and a comfortable handle. The spout lets you reach the compost under the leaves and pour slowly, which matters most with small pots on a shelf.

The Blush Pink Scalloped Indoor Watering Can and the Mushroom Scalloped Indoor Watering Can both have a slender spout and an FSC beech wood handle, with a powder-coated steel body.

An olla is the better choice for them. Once it is filled, a Pepin olla releases water to the roots over time, so a missed watering matters less.

Choosing the right plant helps too. For plants that cope with dry spells, look at our cacti and succulents or easy care houseplants.

It depends on the plant, the pot and the season, so go by the compost rather than the calendar. For most leafy houseplants, water when the top 2 to 3cm of compost feels dry, and pour slowly with an indoor watering can until water runs from the drainage holes.

Water less often in autumn and winter, and let cacti and succulents dry out further between waterings. Feeds such as those in our Plant Care Gifts are best given in spring and summer, when plants are growing.

A plant to water. Our houseplants under £10 include small plants that suit any watering gift, and our luxury houseplant gifts have bigger plants for a larger present.

Add a feed from our Plant Care Gifts for the growing season. If you are not sure what they need, the GrowTropicals e-gift card lets them choose for themselves.
