Alocasia

Alocasia, commonly known as Elephant Ear plants, are among the most sculptural and sought-after tropical houseplants you can grow. Native to the forests of South and Southeast Asia, they are prized for their bold, arrow-shaped leaves in an extraordinary range of textures, from glossy and ribbed to deep velvet. Our collection runs from easy-going favourites to rare collector varieties, including Alocasia 'Black Velvet', the striking 'Frydek' Variegata, the metallic 'Silver Dragon' and the textured 'Dragon Scale'. For our rarest varieties we propagate in our own UK nursery, and we work with trusted partner nurseries for the rest. Every plant is grown on and inspected before dispatch, with next-day delivery available and a 7-day live arrival guarantee.

    Types of Alocasia

There are around 90 recognised species of Alocasia, and at Grow Tropicals we focus on the most visually striking varieties for collectors and confident growers alike. Alocasia 'Black Velvet' is a compact jewel with deep, velvety near-black leaves and silver veining. Alocasia zebrina is grown for its tall, patterned petioles and arrow-shaped leaves. Alocasia cuprea 'Red Secret' offers coppery, metallic foliage, while Alocasia 'Dragon Scale' and Alocasia 'Silver Dragon' show off intricately embossed, reptilian leaf texture.

For something rarer, Alocasia 'Frydek' Variegata pairs deep green velvet leaves with cream variegation, and Alocasia Melo has a distinctive stiff, rhino-skin texture unlike anything else in the genus.

    How to Care for Alocasia

Alocasia grow best in bright indirect light. A spot near a window with filtered sun gives them the brightness they need without scorching the leaves. Water when the top few centimetres of substrate feel dry, and always use a pot with drainage, as Alocasia dislike sitting in wet compost and are prone to root rot if overwatered. A free-draining, aerated mix is essential; our Premium Alocasia Potting Mix is blended specifically for the genus.

These are warmth-loving plants that prefer temperatures between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius and appreciate humidity above 50 per cent. A bathroom or kitchen spot, or a nearby humidifier, will keep foliage looking its best. Feed every two to four weeks through spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. If your Alocasia drops a leaf or dies back in winter, do not panic: many go through a natural dormancy and will reshoot from the corm when conditions warm up.

    Are Alocasia Safe for Pets?

Alocasia are not considered safe for cats or dogs. Their leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation and swelling of the mouth if chewed. Keep them out of reach of curious pets, and browse our pet-safe houseplants for greenery better suited to homes with animals. Always check individual product pages for specific details.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Alocasia prefer bright, indirect light and consistently moist (but not waterlogged) soil. They thrive in warm, humid conditions, so mist regularly or place on a pebble tray. Varieties like Alocasia Black Velvet are more compact and slightly more tolerant of lower humidity, making them a great starting point for beginners.

Alocasia naturally shed older leaves as new ones emerge, so losing one or two at a time is normal. If multiple leaves are dropping, check for overwatering, cold draughts, or insufficient light. During winter, some Alocasia enter a dormancy period and may lose most of their foliage. Keep the corm barely moist and in a warm spot, and new growth should return in spring.

Yes, all Alocasia species contain calcium oxalate crystals, which are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or ingested. Keep them out of reach of pets, or browse our pet-friendly plants collection for non-toxic alternatives.

For UK homes, compact varieties tend to do best. Alocasia Bambino and Alocasia Amazonica Dwarf stay small and manageable, while Alocasia Dragon Scale and Alocasia Frydek offer stunning textured foliage. For something truly unusual, the velvet-leaved varieties are hard to beat.

Most Alocasia appreciate humidity above 50%, which is higher than the average UK home in winter. Grouping plants together, using a humidifier, or placing your Alocasia in a bathroom or kitchen can help. Species from our bathroom plants collection are chosen specifically for their love of humid conditions.

Water when the top 2 to 3 centimetres of soil feel dry. In the growing season (spring and summer), this is usually once or twice a week. Reduce watering in winter as growth slows. Always ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water sitting around the roots. Alocasia share similar watering needs to other aroids in our Philodendron and Anthurium collections.
