    What is in a plant starter kit

    Our plant kits pair two plants with the potting mix that suits them. The Monstera Starter Kit has Monstera deliciosa 'Thai Constellation' and Monstera adansonii 'Monkey Mask' with our Monstera & Philodendron Premium Potting Mix, which is chunky and drains freely so roots get air as well as water. The Alocasia Starter Kit pairs Alocasia 'Jacklyn' and 'Dragon Scale' with our Alocasia mix, which drains quickly because Alocasias hate sitting wet.

    Kits for rarer aroids

    If you already grow a few houseplants, the Rare Monstera Starter Kit pairs Monstera 'Burle Marx Flame' with Monstera obliqua 'Peru Form'. The Anthurium Starter Kit brings together the velvety Anthurium warocqueanum, known as the Queen Anthurium, and Anthurium peltigerum, with our chunky Anthurium mix.     Kits for succulents and tissue culture

    The Succulent Starter Kit pairs a variegated string of pearls with Lithops, or living stones, and an 8L bag of Simply Cacti mix. Both store water in their leaves, so they want bright light and very little watering.

    For growers working with plantlets, the Tissue Culture Starter Kit contains domed cups, sphagnum moss and perlite for moving young plants from the lab into normal growing conditions. It does not include hydrogen peroxide. Our semi-acclimated TC plantlets are a good place to find plantlets to use it with.

    The Succulent Starter Kit comes with an 8L bag of Simply Cacti mix, and the Tissue Culture Starter Kit contains domed cups, sphagnum moss and perlite rather than plants. Each product page lists the plants, pot sizes and mix included.

    The Monstera Starter Kit and the Philodendron Starter Kit are a good first step into aroids. Both come with a chunky, free draining mix, and the plants want bright, indirect light, such as a spot near an east-facing window or a metre or two back from a south-facing one.

    The Succulent Starter Kit suits a sunny windowsill and someone who tends to forget to water. The Anthurium and Rare Monstera kits are better for people who already grow a few aroids and can give them warmth and humidity.

    Give Monstera, Philodendron, Alocasia and Anthurium bright, indirect light and water when the top 2 to 3 cm of compost feels dry. Alocasias dislike wet roots, which is why the Alocasia Starter Kit comes with our quick draining Alocasia mix.

    In spring and summer, feed every two to four weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Succulents and Lithops need far less water than aroids, so let the mix dry out completely between waterings. Our plant care gifts collection has more products to add to a kit.

    You can pot the plants up the day they arrive, or give them a week or two to settle first. Move each plant into a pot only slightly larger than its current one, using the mix from the kit.

    Monstera, Philodendron, Alocasia and Anthurium contain calcium oxalate crystals and are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed. String of pearls, in the Succulent Starter Kit, is also toxic to pets.
