🌿 Plant Care Tips

Pilea involucrata ‘Norfolk’ is a compact, creeping perennial grown for its deeply textured foliage and contrasting leaf colouration. This cultivar of Pilea involucrata forms low, spreading stems with opposite, ovate leaves that are strongly quilted. The leaf surface is dark green to bronze with pronounced silvery-green veining, while the undersides are flushed burgundy to red. New growth often emerges brighter green before deepening in colour as it matures.

Its naturally spreading habit makes it well-suited to pots, shallow planters or terrariums. Stems root easily at the nodes where they touch the soil, forming a dense mat over time. In indoor conditions in the UK, it typically remains under 30 cm tall with a wider spread, making it perfect for growing indoors in smaller spaces.

Native to: Central and northern South America, particularly Panama, Colombia and parts of Venezuela, where it grows as an understory plant in warm, humid tropical forests.

Water: Keep the compost consistently lightly moist during active growth. Water thoroughly when the top third of the pot has dried, allowing excess water to drain away. Avoid leaving the plant standing in water, as overly wet compost can lead to stem and root rot. Reduce watering slightly in cooler months but do not allow the root ball to dry out completely.

Light: Bright filtered light is ideal. It will tolerate moderate indirect light, though leaf colour and contrast are strongest in brighter positions. Avoid direct sunlight, especially during midday hours, as this can scorch and fade the textured foliage.

Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally above 60%. It benefits from higher humidity levels and makes it perfect for growing indoors in kitchens, bathrooms or enclosed terrariums. Avoid placing near radiators or cold draughts.

Temperature: Best kept between 18–24°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C, as prolonged cool conditions can cause leaf drop and slowed growth. Maintain stable indoor temperatures away from sudden fluctuations.
