Summer gives you the widest choice of any season, so the trick is less about finding colour and more about keeping it going. The best summer borders mix plants that peak at slightly different times through June, July and August, so there is always something coming into flower as the last lot fades.
The plants here cover that whole stretch, from early summer risers to late performers that run towards autumn. Most flower hardest in sun and reward deadheading with more blooms. They suit borders, gravel and large pots, and many are excellent for cutting or for drawing in bees and butterflies.
All grown for UK gardens and sent out well rooted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Mix plants that peak at different points across June, July and August, and deadhead regularly. The flowering months are listed on each plant page so you can spread the display.
New plants need regular water through their first summer while they root in. After that many cope with less, though pots always dry out faster and need watching in hot spells.
Open, single flowers are easiest for bees and butterflies to feed on. Summer is the peak season for pollinator activity, so it is the best time to plant for wildlife.
Many are. A dedicated row or a generous border gives you flowers to bring indoors all summer, and cutting often encourages the plant to produce more.
