Senecio maritima 'Silver Dust', better known as Dusty Miller and correctly named Jacobaea maritima, is grown for its finely cut, silver-white felted foliage that lights up borders, pots and gravel gardens. The deeply lobed leaves are covered in soft, felty hairs that give the whole plant a cool, almost metallic shimmer. It is a brilliant foil for stronger colours and a favourite for adding contrast to sunny planting.

This is first and foremost a sun-loving foliage plant. In its second year it may throw up small, mustard yellow daisy flowers, though many gardeners trim these off to keep the focus on the silver leaves. It is borderline hardy, so it is often grown as seasonal bedding or given a little winter protection in colder gardens. What should I do when my plant arrives?

It's completely normal for your plant to look a little tired or droopy after transit. This is called transit stress, and most plants bounce back within a week or two. You might see a yellow leaf or some drooping, don't panic, and resist the urge to overwater or start repotting straight away.
