• Is Hosta 'Big Daddy' hardy in the UK?

  Yes. Big Daddy is rated RHS H7, fully hardy throughout Britain and untroubled by hard frost once established. As a deciduous perennial it dies back to a dormant crown in late autumn and reappears every spring, so an empty patch over winter is completely normal.   It is one of the true giants. A settled clump reaches roughly 55 to 65cm tall and a broad 150 to 170cm across, forming a dome of huge puckered leaves that makes a bold anchor in exotic borders. Allow it plenty of room to spread.

• Where is the best place to plant Hosta 'Big Daddy'?

  Partial to full shade is ideal, and it is where the blue-grey colouring holds best, as hot sun fades the bloom on the leaves. It shines in a cool shady border and also grows well as a specimen in a large container, so it suits both shady spots and pots and containers.

• How do I stop slugs and snails eating my hosta?

  Slugs and snails are the classic hosta pest, but Big Daddy is one of the more resistant varieties thanks to its thick, heavily puckered leaves. Help it further by clearing hiding places, watering in the morning rather than at dusk, and using wildlife-friendly controls such as wool pellets, grit or nematodes in spring as the new shoots push through.

• Is Hosta 'Big Daddy' poisonous to cats, dogs or horses?

  Yes. Like all hostas, Big Daddy contains saponins and is toxic to cats, dogs and horses if the leaves, roots or flowers are eaten, typically causing vomiting, diarrhoea and general upset. It is best sited where pets are not inclined to graze, and any concerns should be checked with your vet.

• Does Hosta 'Big Daddy' flower?

  It does. In early summer near-white, bell-shaped flowers rise on tall scapes above the foliage, and the bees are quick to find them, making it a quietly useful choice among plants for pollinators. That said, this hosta is grown first and foremost for its magnificent blue foliage.

They adjust faster to your light and humidity, put out new growth more quickly, and tend to establish stronger root systems long-term. A plant that grows into your space will usually outperform one that was already big when it arrived.
  
  That said, every plant is an individual. The one you receive may vary slightly in height, shape, or fullness compared to the photo, that's the nature of living things, not a quality issue. Before anything leaves us, it's checked over by our horticultural team to make sure it's healthy, well-rooted, and ready to thrive in your home. We're not shifting volume off a pallet, we're choosing plants we'd want to keep ourselves.

• What should I do when my plant arrives?
  First things first, unbox it as soon as you can. Plants don't love being in dark boxes any more than you would, and the sooner yours is out and breathing, the better.
  
  Remove all the packaging carefully, give the soil a check with your finger, and water lightly if it feels dry. Then find it a spot with appropriate light, but avoid putting it straight into harsh direct sun or next to a radiator. Think of it like arriving somewhere new after a long journey: it needs a moment to adjust.
  
  It's completely normal for your plant to look a little tired or droopy after transit. This is called transit stress, and most plants bounce back within a week or two. You might see a yellow leaf or some drooping, don't panic, and resist the urge to overwater or start repotting straight away.
  
  Our advice for the first couple of weeks: leave it in its nursery pot, water it only when the top layer of soil feels dry, and let it acclimatise to your home's light, temperature, and humidity. Once it's settled in and showing signs of new growth, you can think about repotting or moving it to its permanent spot.
