  Full sun in poor, sharply drained, acid to neutral soil: sand, gravel or gritty loam. It comes from the South African fynbos, so it wants lean living rather than rich borders, and it will sulk or rot in heavy, wet ground. A raised bed, slope or dry gravel garden suits it perfectly, and it thrives in coastal gardens.

• Can Leucadendron grow in shade?

  No, it really needs full sun. In shade the growth becomes loose and leggy and you lose the red leaf tips and richly coloured bracts that are the whole point of 'Mrs Stanley'. The more light it gets, the deeper the colour.

  Yes, and for most UK gardens a container is the best way to grow it. Use a gritty, low-nutrient, lime-free mix, make sure the pot drains freely, and water sparingly outside high summer. • How should I feed and prune Leucadendron?

  Barely feed it at all. Like most Proteaceae it is phosphorus sensitive, so avoid standard fertilisers and bone meal; if growth looks pale, use a specialist low-phosphorus feed at half strength. Prune lightly in late spring once the bract display fades, taking stems back within the leafy growth and never into old bare wood. Stems cut for arrangements last for weeks and the trimming does the pruning for you.

• How big will my plant be when it arrives?

A plant that grows into your space will usually outperform one that was already big when it arrived.

  First things first, unbox it as soon as you can. Plants don't love being in dark boxes any more than you would, and the sooner yours is out and breathing, the better.
  
  Remove all the packaging carefully, give the soil a check with your finger, and water lightly if it feels dry. Then find it a spot with appropriate light, but avoid putting it straight into harsh direct sun or next to a radiator. Think of it like arriving somewhere new after a long journey: it needs a moment to adjust.
  
  It's completely normal for your plant to look a little tired or droopy after transit. This is called transit stress, and most plants bounce back within a week or two. You might see a yellow leaf or some drooping, don't panic, and resist the urge to overwater or start repotting straight away.
  
  Our advice for the first couple of weeks: leave it in its nursery pot, water it only when the top layer of soil feels dry, and let it acclimatise to your home's light, temperature, and humidity.
