Description

Leucadendron 'Mrs Stanley' is a densely upright, evergreen conebush from the protea family that behaves like a slow-motion firework. Fine, upswept mid-green leaves are tipped red, and from summer the branch tips carry soft pinkish-red bracts with cream centres that deepen steadily to rich burgundy as the weather cools, keeping the show running through autumn and winter when little else is performing.

Like most South African Proteaceae it is a plant for the milder, sharper-drained corners of the UK. Treat it as half hardy, taking around -5C (H3): happy in the ground in coastal and sheltered town gardens, and an outstanding container plant everywhere else, moved into a porch or cold greenhouse for the worst of winter.

Where is the best place to plant a Leucadendron?

It forms a dense, upright shrub of around 1m tall and wide within the first few years, maturing at roughly 1.5m by 1.5m. Light trimming after the bract display, or simply cutting stems for the vase, keeps it compact.

How should I feed and prune Leucadendron?

Barely feed it at all. Like most Proteaceae it is phosphorus sensitive, so avoid standard fertilisers and bone meal; if growth looks pale, use a specialist low-phosphorus feed at half strength. Prune lightly in late spring once the bract display fades, taking stems back within the leafy growth and never into old bare wood. Stems cut for arrangements last for weeks and the trimming does the pruning for you.

Does my plant come with a pot?

What should I do when my plant arrives?
First things first, unbox it as soon as you can. Plants don't love being in dark boxes any more than you would, and the sooner yours is out and breathing, the better.

Remove all the packaging carefully, give the soil a check with your finger, and water lightly if it feels dry. Then find it a spot with appropriate light, but avoid putting it straight into harsh direct sun or next to a radiator. Think of it like arriving somewhere new after a long journey: it needs a moment to adjust.

It's completely normal for your plant to look a little tired or droopy after transit. This is called transit stress, and most plants bounce back within a week or two. You might see a yellow leaf or some drooping, don't panic, and resist the urge to overwater or start repotting straight away.

Our advice for the first couple of weeks: leave it in its nursery pot, water it only when the top layer of soil feels dry, and let it acclimatise to your home's light, temperature, and humidity. Once it's settled in and showing signs of new growth, you can think about repotting or moving it to its permanent spot.
