Crocosmia masoniorum, the giant montbretia, is the boldest and most statuesque of all the crocosmias and a star performer in any late-summer exotic border. From a clump of broad, upright and beautifully pleated sword-shaped leaves rise tall arching spikes carrying dense sprays of upward-facing, flame-orange flowers, each one glowing with a warm yellow base. At around 1.2m tall it brings real height and drama exactly when the garden needs a lift, and it holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding garden performance.
This South African species has proved thoroughly at home in British gardens. Rated RHS H4, it is hardy across most of the UK, the corms sitting dormant below ground through winter before bursting back into growth each spring. In colder or wetter areas a deep autumn mulch over the crowns sees it reliably through the coldest months. For more on how these plants behave through the seasons, see our hardy exotics guide.
Water well through the first season while the corms establish, after which the clumps become impressively resilient and fairly drought-tolerant. The nectar-rich flowers are a magnet for bees, butterflies and hoverflies, making it a brilliant choice for wildlife and pollinator planting. Use it towards the middle or back of exotic borders, in bold coastal and exposed seaside schemes, or in a large container on a sunny patio among your other plants for pots. It sits beautifully alongside our other hardy exotics.
Every Crocosmia we supply is nursery-grown and carefully selected for a strong, healthy corm and root system, packed with care to arrive in top condition and ready to establish quickly.
All plants are covered by our 7-day live arrival guarantee. We pack every order in protective, sustainable packaging designed to keep your plants safe in transit, and every plant is checked before it ships. On the rare occasion something is not right on arrival, we will make it good, provided the plant is still in its original nursery pot.

Crocosmia masoniorum needs full sun or partial shade and moist but well-drained soil. It is hardy to around −10°C, standing an average UK winter outdoors.
RHS H4 · Hardy Exotic · down to around −10°C
Keep the soil moist through the first growing season while the corms root in, watering well in dry spells. Once established the clumps are fairly drought-tolerant. Lift and divide congested clumps every few years in spring to keep them flowering freely.

Deciduous
Cut faded flower stems, leave the foliage to die back naturally, then tidy in late winter. Lift and divide congested clumps in spring.
Crocosmia are generally regarded as non-toxic and there are no serious toxicity reports for people, cats or dogs. As with many garden plants, eating the corms or foliage may cause mild stomach upset, so it is sensible to discourage pets and children from doing so.
