    Bulbophyllum: Care and Collector Orchids

    What Are Bulbophyllum Orchids?

Bulbophyllum is a vast genus of over 2,000 orchid species, grown for some of the strangest and most beautiful flowers in the plant world. Many have moving, hinged lips, fringed petals or striking patterns, as seen in Bulbophyllum lobbii. They grow as epiphytes on trees in the wild, and range from tiny terrarium miniatures to larger plants best grown mounted or in baskets.

    How to Care for Bulbophyllum

Most Bulbophyllum enjoy warm, humid, intermediate conditions with bright, indirect light and steady air movement. As epiphytes they resent stale, wet compost, so they are best grown mounted or in an open, free-draining orchid mix, kept evenly moist while in active growth. Many creeping species dislike being disturbed, so allow them to establish. Miniature species make superb terrarium orchids alongside Lepanthes.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Bulbophyllum is one of the largest orchid genera, famous for its unusual, intricate and sometimes fragrant flowers.

They grow as epiphytes and range from tiny terrarium miniatures to larger mounted specimens.

Give them warm, humid, intermediate conditions, bright indirect light and gentle airflow. Grow them mounted or in an open, free-draining orchid mix.

Keep them evenly moist during active growth and avoid stale, waterlogged compost.

Many miniature Bulbophyllum are excellent terrarium orchids, enjoying the stable humidity of an enclosed display.

Larger species are usually better mounted or grown in baskets.

Some Bulbophyllum produce strongly scented flowers, occasionally unpleasant, to attract their natural pollinators.

Many others are simply striking and unusual to look at, which is why they are so collectable.

Many Bulbophyllum, especially creeping species, grow best mounted or in shallow baskets, which suits their epiphytic, spreading habit.

An open, free-draining medium is essential either way.

Orchids such as Bulbophyllum are generally regarded as non-toxic to cats and dogs.
