Coffea arabica, commonly known as the Arabian coffee plant, is an evergreen shrub cherished for its glossy, dark green leaves and fragrant white flowers. When cultivated indoors in the UK, it typically reaches heights of up to 1.5 metres, making it a manageable and attractive houseplant. With proper care, it may produce small red berries, each containing two seeds, known as coffee beans.
Native to
Coffea arabica is indigenous to the highland regions of Ethiopia in northeastern tropical Africa. In its natural habitat, it thrives under the canopy of taller trees, receiving dappled sunlight and consistent moisture.
Water
Maintain consistently moist soil for your coffee plant, ensuring it is neither waterlogged nor completely dry. Water regularly during the growing season (spring and summer), reducing frequency in the winter months when growth slows. Always use tepid water to avoid shocking the roots.
Light
Position the plant in bright, indirect light, avoiding direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. An east or west-facing window with filtered light is ideal. Insufficient light may hinder flowering and berry production.
Humidity
High humidity is essential for Coffea arabica. Aim for humidity levels around 50% or higher. Increase humidity by placing the plant on a tray of pebbles filled with water, ensuring the pot base is above the waterline, or by regularly misting the leaves. This preference for high humidity makes it suitable for terrarium cultivation, provided the plant size is appropriate.
Temperature
Maintain indoor temperatures between 16–24°C, avoiding exposure to temperatures below 15°C. Protect the plant from cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations to prevent stress and potential leaf drop.
