Silver foliage plants earn their place all year. Their pale, light-catching leaves cool down hot colour schemes, hold their shape through winter, and shrug off the dry, sunny spots where thirstier plants sulk.
Silver and grey leaves come from plants built for bright, exposed places. Many grew a fine coating of hairs or a waxy bloom to reflect strong sun and slow water loss, which is why so many silver foliage plants cope well with drought, gravel gardens, coastal wind and hot borders. Give most of them free-draining soil and plenty of light and they look after themselves.
They also earn their keep as a foil for stronger colours. Silver sits between hot reds and oranges to calm them, and lifts purples, blues and whites at dusk when the light drops. A good number stay evergreen, so the structure holds through winter once the flowers have gone. For shadier spots, look to ferns and brunnera with silver marbling rather than the sun lovers, and keep those a little more moist.
Everything here is grown for UK gardens and sent out well rooted, ready to plant straight into borders, pots or a dry sunny bank.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most do best in full sun. The silver colouring comes from tiny hairs or a waxy bloom that reflect strong light, so a bright, open spot keeps the leaves at their brightest and the plant healthiest. They also prefer free-draining soil that never sits wet.
Many are. Plenty of silver-leaved plants hold their foliage through winter and give the garden structure when little else is going on. Some are herbaceous and die back in autumn, so check the individual plant page if year-round cover matters to you.
Most silver plants want sun, but a few cope with shade. Ferns with a silver sheen and brunnera with marbled leaves both lift a darker corner. These prefer soil that stays slightly moist rather than the dry conditions the sun lovers enjoy.
Yes. Silver and grey leaves are one of the best signs a plant can handle drought. The reflective surface cuts water loss, so these suit gravel gardens, sunny banks and pots that dry out quickly in summer.
