Description

Hydrangea hydrangeoides f. concolor 'Moonlight', still widely sold as Schizophragma hydrangeoides 'Moonlight', is the silver-leaved form of the Japanese hydrangea vine. Each heart-shaped leaf is washed with a silvery blue-green sheen and etched with dark green veins, so the plant looks good from the moment it leafs out in spring. In midsummer it carries flat, lacecap-style heads of small creamy flowers, each ringed with large white bracts that hang like petals, and the foliage picks up orange and yellow tints before it drops in autumn.

Hardiness and seasons. This is a fully hardy, deciduous, self-clinging climber rated H5, so it stands up to severe winters across most of the UK. It is bare through winter, leafs out in spring, flowers from around July into August and colours in autumn. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

How and where to grow. Give it a wall, fence or tree trunk to climb: it clings with aerial roots and needs no wires once it has taken hold. It grows in full sun or partial shade and is one of the best climbers for a north or east facing wall, where the silver leaves show to full effect. It is happy on chalk, clay, loam or sand as long as the soil is fertile, moist and well drained, and it copes with exposed or sheltered positions. It is slow to get going for the first year or two, then vigorous, reaching 8 to 12m in time, so allow plenty of room.

Using it in the garden. Use 'Moonlight' to clothe a shaded house wall, a bare fence or a mature tree with a curtain of silvery foliage. It pairs beautifully with ferns, hostas and other shade lovers at its feet, and the white summer flowers light up a dim corner. It also grows well in a large container against a wall if kept watered.

Is Schizophragma 'Moonlight' the same as a climbing hydrangea?

It is a close relative. It was long classed as Schizophragma hydrangeoides, but the RHS and Kew now place it in Hydrangea as Hydrangea hydrangeoides. It climbs the same way, with aerial roots, but its white bracts are single, petal-like and larger than those of Hydrangea petiolaris.

Does it need wires or a trellis?

No. Once it has taken hold it clings to brick, stone, timber or bark with aerial roots. Tie the young shoots to the surface for the first season to help them grip.

Will it grow on a north facing wall?

Yes, it is one of the best climbers for a north or east wall. The silvery leaves actually look their best in light shade, and it still flowers well.

How fast does it grow?

It is slow for the first year or two while it roots in, then vigorous. Mature plants can reach 8 to 12m, so give it a large wall or a tree and prune to keep it within bounds if needed.

Is it safe for pets?

When you're ready to repot (usually after a growing season or when roots start poking out the bottom), you can move it into something more permanent with fresh soil.

How big will my plant be when it arrives?
Every plant on our site includes the pot size (e.g. 12cm) and, where possible, an approximate height. That's the most reliable way to set your expectations, photos can sometimes make a plant look larger or smaller than it really is.

If you're thinking "that sounds quite small for the price," here's something worth knowing: younger, smaller plants almost always adapt better to your home than larger ones. They adjust faster to your light and humidity, put out new growth more quickly, and tend to establish stronger root systems long-term. A plant that grows into your space will usually outperform one that was already big when it arrived.

That said, every plant is an individual. The one you receive may vary slightly in height, shape, or fullness compared to the photo, that's the nature of living things, not a quality issue. We select healthy, well-established specimens, and if you ever feel your plant doesn't match what you were expecting, just get in touch and we'll take a look.

What should I do when my plant arrives?
First things first, unbox it as soon as you can. Plants don't love being in dark boxes any more than you would, and the sooner yours is out and breathing, the better.

Remove all the packaging carefully, give the soil a check with your finger, and water lightly if it feels dry. Then find it a spot with appropriate light, but avoid putting it straight into harsh direct sun or next to a radiator. Think of it like arriving somewhere new after a long journey: it needs a moment to adjust.

It's completely normal for your plant to look a little tired or droopy after transit. This is called transit stress, and most plants bounce back within a week or two. You might see a yellow leaf or some drooping, don't panic, and resist the urge to overwater or start repotting straight away.

Our advice for the first couple of weeks: leave it in its nursery pot, water it only when the top layer of soil feels dry, and let it acclimatise to your home's light, temperature, and humidity. Once it's settled in and showing signs of new growth, you can think about repotting or moving it to its permanent spot.
