When should I plant out, and how deep?
Hardy plants can go in the ground at any time the soil is not frozen or waterlogged. Spring and autumn are ideal because the soil is moist and warm enough for roots to establish. Tender and half hardy plants should wait until the risk of frost has passed, usually late May in most of the UK.
Plant at the same depth as the plant sat in its pot, so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Water in well and keep watered through the first summer while the roots establish. Each outdoor listing gives the ideal aspect and soil.
Our outdoor growing guides cover planting and first year care for each group of hardy exotics.
