Will my plants survive if I go on holiday?
For a week or two, yes, with a little preparation. Water thoroughly the day before you leave, move plants away from bright windows and radiators so they dry out more slowly, and group them together to raise the humidity. Cacti and succulents can happily go a month without water.
For longer trips, a self watering pot or a simple wick from a jar of water keeps compost evenly moist, or ask a friend to water once a week. Do not leave plants standing in water, which does more harm than a dry spell.
