Euphorbia globosa, the globose spurge, is a dwarf South African succulent built from stacked, nearly spherical segments, like a string of green peas that decided to become a plant. It stays small, slowly forming a low mound to about 8cm tall, and in season sends up starry, greenish yellow flower heads on improbably long thin stalks. A proper oddball for anyone collecting cacti and succulents.
Origins. It comes from coastal scrub in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, where it grows with its swollen base partly buried. The species is assessed as Endangered in habitat, which makes cultivated plants all the more worth looking after. It is spineless, but like every Euphorbia it bleeds an irritant milky sap, so handle it with gloves and keep it away from pets and children.
Care. Give it your sunniest windowsill; it belongs with the bright light houseplants and takes some direct sun happily. Water sparingly in spring and summer, letting the gritty mix dry out fully between drinks, and keep it almost completely dry over winter in a cool, frost free spot. Slow growing, long lived and very easy to please in a free draining mix.

Euphorbia globosa is an easy-care houseplant. It needs bright direct light, average household humidity and a minimum temperature of 8°C. It is harmful to pets and small children if eaten.
Easy care
Bright, direct sun
As much light as you can give it, including direct sun on a south or west windowsill. Plants kept shadier grow leggier and flower less.
Happy at normal household humidity
Normal room air is ideal. Avoid humid, stagnant corners; it wants dry air and good airflow.
Keep above 8°C · Tolerates a cool room
Warm in the growing season. In winter it rests happily cool, down to about 8C, as long as the compost is dry. Keep it frost free.
Feed monthly with a balanced fertiliser from spring to autumn, and let it rest over winter.
Harmful if chewed or swallowed. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children, and wash your hands after pruning.
