A focal point works because everything around it is quieter. Place one strong shape where the eye naturally lands, at the end of a path, beside a door, or where a border turns a corner, and keep the planting around it simple. Two focal points competing in a small space cancel each other out.
In a larger garden, repeat one shape at intervals along a border to give it rhythm. The eye follows the repeat and reads the whole planting as deliberate rather than accidental. It is the simplest trick in garden design and it works with any of the upright, spiky or fan shaped plants here. Keep the repeated plant consistent and vary what sits between them.

Leave more room than looks right on planting day and let the plant grow into it. Underplant with something low and plain rather than another strong shape.
