Fatsia japonica 'Variegata' is the variegated Japanese aralia, carrying the same huge, glossy, deeply lobed leaves as the green species, each finished with a neat cream margin. The leaves reach around 30cm across, and that pale edge lifts the deep green beautifully in a shady corner. Where 'Spider's Web' is speckled and dusted white across the whole leaf, 'Variegata' holds its cream at the rim, a cleaner and bolder look. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Hardiness and seasons. The RHS rates it H5, hardy to around -10C, and it keeps its leaves all year. Several UK nurseries treat the variegated form as tenderer than the green species, one rating it nearer -5C, so think of it as hardy in most gardens given shelter rather than bombproof. In autumn, mature plants carry spherical clusters of creamy white flowers, a late feast for pollinators, followed by small black berries.
In the garden. This is a shrub for lighting up shade: an exotic border, a sheltered courtyard, a north-facing bed. It also does well in a large container, where it can be moved under cover in a brutal cold snap. See the rest of our Fatsia collection for companions.
All plants are covered by our 7-day live arrival guarantee. We pack every order in protective, sustainable packaging designed to keep your plants safe in transit, and every plant is checked before it ships. On the rare occasion something is not right on arrival, we will make it good, provided the plant is still in its original nursery pot.

Fatsia japonica 'Variegata' needs partial shade or full shade and moist but well-drained soil. It is hardy to around −15°C and stands a UK winter outdoors.
RHS H5 · Hardy Exotic · down to around −15°C
Water regularly through the first year and mulch well; established plants only need water in long dry spells. Container plants need regular watering and feeding.

Autumn (typically October to November) · White, Cream
Evergreen
No routine pruning needed (RHS pruning group 9). Remove yellowed leaves and tidy frost-damaged shoots in late spring, and cut out any shoots that revert to plain green so the variegation stays dominant.
Not listed as toxic to pets: NC State tags the species non-toxic for cats, dogs and horses. The RHS notes the ornamental fruit is not for eating and suggests gloves when handling.
