🌿 Plant Care Tips

Ruellia makoyana, commonly known as the Monkey Plant or Trailing Velvet Plant, is a captivating evergreen perennial native to the coastal rainforests of southeastern Brazil. It thrives in the understory of the Mata Atlântica, where it benefits from warm, humid, and filtered light conditions. This species is cherished for its velvety, ovate leaves adorned with striking silvery-white veins and a purplish underside, complemented by tubular pink flowers that bloom primarily in winter and spring

In cultivation, Ruellia makoyana typically reaches a height of 15–50 cm and spreads up to 45 cm, making it ideal for hanging baskets or as a trailing accent in mixed containers. Its trailing habit and ornamental foliage have earned it the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, signifying its excellence for home cultivation.

Water:
Maintain consistently moist soil, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot. During winter, reduce watering frequency as the plant's growth slows.Aquasabi

Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while too little light may diminish flowering. An east- or north-facing window is ideal.

Humidity:
Thrives in high humidity environments (around 70%). In drier indoor settings, increase humidity by misting regularly, using a pebble tray, or placing a humidifier nearby.

Temperature:
Optimal temperatures range between 18–27°C. Protect from temperatures below 12°C, as the plant is sensitive to cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
