Prunus incisa f. yamadei is the pure white form of the Fuji cherry. Masses of small, single, bell-shaped flowers open from green buds in early spring, and because the calyx behind each flower is green rather than red, the blossom reads as a clean, luminous white with no pink tint at all. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, and the form was found near Mount Fuji and recorded in 1916.
Hardiness and seasons. Rated H6 (-20 to -15C), it is hardy throughout the UK. The deeply toothed leaves that give Prunus incisa its name follow the flowers, turning glowing orange and red in autumn, and the early blossom is a valuable nectar source for waking bees.
In the garden. Grow it as a blossom specimen in a lawn or border where the white show reads against dark evergreens or a clear sky. It suits Japanese-style plantings and exotic borders, and being slower and smaller than most flowering cherries it fits gardens that could never take a full-sized tree. For something smaller still, see the dwarf 'Kojo-no-mai'.
All plants are covered by our 7-day live arrival guarantee. We pack every order in protective, sustainable packaging designed to keep your plants safe in transit, and every plant is checked before it ships. On the rare occasion something is not right on arrival, we will make it good, provided the plant is still in its original nursery pot.

Prunus incisa f. yamadei needs full sun and moist but well-drained soil. It is very hardy, standing the coldest UK winters outdoors.

Pruning group 1: it needs little to no pruning. Remove damaged or crossing shoots only, in summer, when cherries are least at risk of silver leaf infection.
As with other cherries, the leaves, stems and seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides and are toxic to dogs, cats and horses if eaten, especially when wilted; the ripe fruit pulp is the exception.
