Prunus incisa 'Kojo-no-mai' is the dwarf Fuji cherry, a small deciduous shrub whose twigs grow in a distinctive zig-zag and disappear each spring under clouds of blossom. The single flowers open white to palest pink with a deeper pink centre, appearing in March and April before the leaves, so the whole plant reads as blossom. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Hardiness and seasons. Rated H6 (-20 to -15C), it is hardy throughout the UK. After the spring show come small, sharply toothed mid-green leaves, and in autumn the foliage turns fiery orange and red. The bare zig-zag branches have a sculptural, bonsai-like quality in winter.
In the garden. One of the best blossom plants for small spaces. It thrives for years in a large pot by a door or on a terrace, suits gravel and Japanese-style plantings, and fits the front of an exotic border where its early nectar feeds waking pollinators. Blossom, autumn fire and winter line on a single metre of ground.
All plants are covered by our 7-day live arrival guarantee. We pack every order in protective, sustainable packaging designed to keep your plants safe in transit, and every plant is checked before it ships. On the rare occasion something is not right on arrival, we will make it good, provided the plant is still in its original nursery pot.

Prunus incisa 'Kojo-no-mai' needs full sun and moist but well-drained soil. It is very hardy, standing the coldest UK winters outdoors.

Water regularly through the first growing season, and keep container plants evenly watered every year; never let a potted cherry sit waterlogged or bone dry in spring.

Pruning group 1: it needs almost no pruning. Remove damaged or misplaced shoots only, in summer, when cherries are least at risk of silver leaf infection.
As with other cherries, the leaves, stems and seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides and are toxic to dogs, cats and horses if eaten, especially when wilted; the ripe fruit pulp is the exception.
