Description

Gigante d’Italia is a big, broad-leaved Italian flat-leaf parsley that crops heavily and keeps going well into the cold months. The leaves are dark green and glossy with a fresh, slightly peppery taste, carried on thick stems that are also chopped and cooked like celery in Italy, hence its other name, Sellerina. Use it by the handful in tabbouleh, salsa verde and gremolata, or scatter it over roasts and soups. Petroselinum crispum 'Gigante d’Italia' grows to about 45 cm and does as well in a deep pot as it does in the vegetable bed.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow indoors in modules March to April, or outdoors April to July; a July sowing gives leaves through autumn and into winter in a sheltered spot.
  • Sow 1 cm deep. Soaking the seed in warm water overnight speeds things up.
  • Germination is slow, usually 3 to 4 weeks, so keep the compost moist and be patient.
  • Full sun or partial shade, in moist, fertile soil.
  • Grows to about 45 cm tall and 20 cm wide.
  • First cuts about 10 to 12 weeks after sowing, then pick regularly from the outside.
  • Hardy biennial: leafy in its first year, then flowers and sets seed in its second.

What you receive: a packet of about 125 seeds from Piccolo Seeds, with growing instructions on the back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are parsley seeds slow to germinate?

Parsley seed has a hard coat and naturally takes three to four weeks to come up, sometimes longer in cold soil. Soaking it overnight in warm water and keeping the compost evenly moist and warm both help. Mark the row so you do not lose track of it while you wait.

Can I grow parsley in a pot?

Yes. Parsley has a long taproot, so choose a pot at least 20 cm deep and fill it with multipurpose compost. Keep it watered and pick from the outer stems so new leaves keep coming from the centre.

Is parsley annual or perennial?

It is a biennial. In its first year it makes leaves; in the second spring it sends up flower stems, the leaves turn coarse, and the plant dies after setting seed. Most gardeners sow fresh each year, often twice, for a continuous supply.

What is your returns policy?

We always aim to make sure our customers love our products, but if you do need to return an order within 14 days of purchase (not including plants*), or any items are damaged, we’re happy to help. Just email us directly at hello@growtropicals.com, and we’ll take you through the process.

Please note: we cannot be held liable for any packaging costs should the original packaging be discarded.

*Unfortunately we cannot accept returns of undamaged plants as these are perishable items and are not saleable upon return. If a plant is damaged, we will compensate for this as per our live arrival guarantee.

When will my order arrive and how much is shipping?

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Shipping costs are based on your total order value and will be calculated at checkout, with free shipping automatically applied to all orders over £60. For a full breakdown of shipping prices see our Help Centre.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
