Black Mondo Grass
Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens'
Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens', better known as black mondo grass, is one of the most dramatic evergreen plants you can grow - and the only one with foliage of a genuine, glossy near-black. An RHS Award of Garden Merit plant, it forms slowly spreading tufts of arching, strap-like leaves that make an unforgettable contrast against silver, lime-green, gold or pale gravel.
Use black mondo grass to edge a path or border, to weave through gravel and contemporary planting, as striking ground cover, or in pots where its inky colour can be shown off. Small spikes of pale pink-lilac flowers in summer are followed by shining black berries.
How and where to grow it
For the deepest black, give it good light - full sun or partial shade - in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil. It colours best in brighter spots and can look greener in deep shade. Fully hardy and evergreen, it spreads slowly by underground runners to form a dark carpet over time, and needs only the removal of any tatty old leaves in spring.
- Position: full sun to partial shade - more light deepens the black
- Soil: moist but well-drained, humus-rich
- Care: evergreen, slow-spreading and low-maintenance
Every plant is nursery-grown and carefully selected, ready to bring its unique, sophisticated colour to your garden.
-
'Nigrescens' is a naturally near-black form of mondo grass - the only widely grown plant with genuinely black, glossy strap-like foliage, which is why it's so prized for contrast.
-
It keeps the darkest, glossiest black in good light - full sun or partial shade. In deep shade the foliage tends to look greener, so give it a brighter spot for the strongest effect.
-
Yes, it's fully hardy (RHS H5) and evergreen, holding its black foliage right through winter. It also holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
-
It spreads slowly by underground runners to form a low, dark carpet over time, but it's well-behaved and never invasive - easy to lift and divide if you want more.
-
Yes, it's superb in containers, where its inky colour stands out, especially paired with silver, gold or lime-green plants. Use a moisture-retentive but well-drained compost.
