Description

'Blue Pepe' is a nasturtium bred for the kitchen, with small steel-blue leaves backed in purple and bright red flowers held just above them. Both leaves and flowers are edible: the leaves have a peppery bite much like watercress, growing hotter in sunny, dry weather, and the flowers are milder with a sweet finish. Scatter them over salads, or pickle the green seed pods as a caper substitute. Tropaeolum majus 'Blue Pepe' stays compact and bushy, so it suits pots, window boxes and the front of a vegetable bed.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow indoors March to April in small pots, or outdoors where it is to flower from May to June once frosts are over
  • Sow 1 to 2 cm deep
  • Germination takes 7 to 14 days
  • Full sun to light shade in poor, well-drained soil; rich soil means fewer flowers
  • Grows to about 20 to 30 cm tall and wide
  • Flowers from June until the first frosts; pick leaves and flowers as needed, which keeps it flowering
  • Annual, not frost hardy

What you receive: a packet of about 10 seeds from Piccolo Seeds, with growing instructions on the back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Blue Pepe nasturtium flowers edible?

Yes. The flowers, leaves and young seed pods are all edible and taste peppery, with the leaves the strongest. Pick in the cool of the morning when the flowers have just opened, and rinse before use.

When should I sow nasturtium seeds?

Sow outdoors from May into June, once the risk of frost has passed, or start them indoors in March and April for earlier flowers. Nasturtiums grow quickly and usually flower about eight to ten weeks after sowing.

Do nasturtiums need feeding?

No. Feeding and rich soil push lots of leafy growth and fewer flowers. A poor, free-draining soil and plenty of sun gives the best display and the hottest leaf flavour.

What is your returns policy?

We always aim to make sure our customers love our products, but if you do need to return an order within 14 days of purchase (not including plants*), or any items are damaged, we’re happy to help. Just email us directly at hello@growtropicals.com, and we’ll take you through the process.

Please note: we cannot be held liable for any packaging costs should the original packaging be discarded.

*Unfortunately we cannot accept returns of undamaged plants as these are perishable items and are not saleable upon return. If a plant is damaged, we will compensate for this as per our live arrival guarantee.

When will my order arrive and how much is shipping?

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Shipping costs are based on your total order value and will be calculated at checkout, with free shipping automatically applied to all orders over £60. For a full breakdown of shipping prices see our Help Centre.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
