Description

Petit Gris de Rennes is the melon to try if you have never grown one in a British summer: it ripens early, stays compact and repays you with small, intensely sweet fruit. The round melons have mottled grey-green skin that warms to gold as they ripen, around deep orange, juicy flesh with a rich, brown-sugar sweetness. This charentais-type heirloom from Brittany is listed in Slow Food's Ark of Taste. Cucumis melo 'Petit Gris de Rennes' makes vines of about 90 cm to 1.2 m, so it fits a greenhouse border, a growbag or a large container.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow indoors mid April to May at 20 to 25°C, one seed per small pot.
  • Sow about 2 cm deep, with the seed on its edge.
  • Germination takes 5 to 10 days in warmth.
  • Plant into a greenhouse, polytunnel or cold frame in late May, or outdoors from mid June in a warm, sheltered, sunny spot with rich soil.
  • Vines reach 90 cm to 1.2 m.
  • Harvest August to September, roughly 80 to 90 days from sowing.
  • Tender annual: it needs warmth and will not tolerate frost.

What you receive: a packet of about 10 seeds from Piccolo Seeds, with growing instructions on the back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I grow melons outdoors in the UK?

Melons do best under glass in the UK, in a greenhouse, polytunnel or cold frame. Petit Gris de Rennes is an early variety, so in a warm summer it can also crop outdoors against a sunny, sheltered wall. Plant out only once nights stay mild in June.

How do I know when Petit Gris de Rennes is ripe?

Watch for the skin turning from grey-green to yellowish orange, a sweet scent at the stalk end and a small crack forming around the stalk. Many fruits slip off the vine with a gentle twist when ready. Easing off watering for the last week concentrates the flavour.

Can I grow this melon in a pot?

Yes. Its compact vines suit a 30 cm pot or a growbag in a greenhouse or on a sunny patio. Feed weekly with a tomato fertiliser once fruits set and keep the compost evenly moist.

What is your returns policy?

We always aim to make sure our customers love our products, but if you do need to return an order within 14 days of purchase (not including plants*), or any items are damaged, we’re happy to help. Just email us directly at hello@growtropicals.com, and we’ll take you through the process.

Please note: we cannot be held liable for any packaging costs should the original packaging be discarded.

*Unfortunately we cannot accept returns of undamaged plants as these are perishable items and are not saleable upon return. If a plant is damaged, we will compensate for this as per our live arrival guarantee.

When will my order arrive and how much is shipping?

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Shipping costs are based on your total order value and will be calculated at checkout, with free shipping automatically applied to all orders over £60. For a full breakdown of shipping prices see our Help Centre.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
