Description

Three fruits you will rarely find in the shops, all compact enough for a patio or a small greenhouse, packed in a gift box for the gardener who has grown everything else. Alpine strawberry 'Baron Solemacher' gives small, intensely perfumed berries from early summer into autumn. Petit Gris de Rennes is a sweet, orange-fleshed French heirloom melon that ripens early enough for a UK summer under glass. Cape gooseberry hides sweet-sharp golden berries inside papery lanterns. All three are open-pollinated, non-hybrid varieties.

Sowing and growing

  • Alpine strawberry (Fragaria vesca): sow on the surface indoors February to April at about 20°C; germination 2 to 4 weeks. Hardy perennial, about 15 to 20 cm tall, fruiting June to October.
  • Melon 'Petit Gris de Rennes' (Cucumis melo): sow indoors mid April to May at 20 to 25°C, 2 cm deep; germination 5 to 10 days. Tender annual, best in a greenhouse or cold frame, harvest August to September.
  • Cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana): sow indoors February to April at about 20°C, 5 mm deep; germination 1 to 3 weeks. Frost tender and grown as an annual, about 70 cm to 1 m tall, fruiting August to October. Eat only fully ripe fruit: unripe berries and the leaves are not edible.

What you receive: a Piccolo Seeds gift box holding three seed packets, Alpine Strawberry 'Baron von Solemacher', Melon 'Petit Gris de Rennes' and Cape Gooseberry, with growing tips and recipes inside.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can these fruits be grown in pots?

Yes, all three suit containers. Alpine strawberries are happy in a 20 to 30 cm pot or window box, the melon in a 30 cm pot or growbag under glass, and cape gooseberry in a 30 cm pot on a sunny patio or in a greenhouse.

Is this a good gift for a beginner?

Alpine strawberry and cape gooseberry are straightforward from seed and need only a warm windowsill to start. The melon is the more ambitious of the three and does best with a greenhouse or cold frame. Each packet has growing instructions on the back.

When should I sow the seeds in this collection?

Start the alpine strawberry and cape gooseberry indoors from February to April, as both are slow to get going. Sow the melon later, from mid April to May, so it is ready to plant under cover in late May. The box keeps well, so it can be given in winter and sown in spring.

What is your returns policy?

We always aim to make sure our customers love our products, but if you do need to return an order within 14 days of purchase (not including plants*), or any items are damaged, we’re happy to help. Just email us directly at hello@growtropicals.com, and we’ll take you through the process.

Please note: we cannot be held liable for any packaging costs should the original packaging be discarded.

*Unfortunately we cannot accept returns of undamaged plants as these are perishable items and are not saleable upon return. If a plant is damaged, we will compensate for this as per our live arrival guarantee.

When will my order arrive and how much is shipping?

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Shipping costs are based on your total order value and will be calculated at checkout, with free shipping automatically applied to all orders over £60. For a full breakdown of shipping prices see our Help Centre.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
