Its juvenile leaves are small and round with a maroon to bronze sheen, which later transitions to dark green or purple as they mature. This species is perfect for growing in high-humidity environments, making it an excellent candidate for terrariums or vivariums. Its climbing habit allows it to attach to vertical surfaces, creating a beautiful display as it spreads.
This Marcgravia thrives in indirect light, preferring bright but diffused sunlight to maintain its vibrant foliage colours. It requires consistently high humidity—typically above 70%—and does best when grown with access to a damp substrate like sphagnum moss to prevent it from drying out. As a slow grower, it can be easily managed indoors, but regular misting or a humidity system is key to keeping it healthy. While it can adapt to standard indoor conditions, it's best grown in a controlled environment like a terrarium to replicate its native tropical habitat.
Native to
Marcgravia sp. 'Azreal' originates from the tropical rainforests of Central or South America, although its exact locality remains unknown. In its natural habitat, it grows epiphytically, clinging to trees and thriving in the humid, shaded forest understory.
Water
This plant prefers consistently moist conditions but is sensitive to waterlogging. Keep the soil or substrate damp, ensuring it doesn’t dry out completely between waterings. Water should be applied carefully to avoid saturating the leaves, as Marcgravia does not tolerate standing water on its foliage.
Light
Marcgravia 'Azreal' grows best in low to medium indirect light. Direct sunlight can damage its leaves, while insufficient light can cause slow growth. Ideal lighting conditions include bright but filtered light, similar to what it would experience in the understorey of a rainforest.
Humidity
High humidity, above 70%, is essential for Marcgravia 'Azreal.' It will thrive in a terrarium or other enclosed environment where humidity can be maintained. If grown outside a terrarium, use a humidifier or mist frequently to keep the air moist, preventing the leaves from drying out and becoming brittle.
Temperature
This tropical plant prefers temperatures between 18°C and 26°C. Avoid exposing it to temperatures below 15°C, as cold conditions can stunt growth and damage its delicate foliage

The conditions in our nursery are a minimum of 60% humidity and 19C year round.
