Description

Quedlinburger Niederliegende is a German lemon balm selected for a higher essential-oil content, which means more scent and a stronger lemon flavour in every leaf. The soft, crinkled, bright green leaves make a fresh herbal tea, lift fruit salads and summer drinks, and suit sauces for fish. The name comes from the town of Quedlinburg in Saxony-Anhalt, and niederliegende means low-lying: Melissa officinalis 'Quedlinburger Niederliegende' forms a bushy, spreading clump that suits pots and the front of a herb bed, and bees visit its small white summer flowers.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow indoors March to May, or outdoors May to June.
  • Sow on the surface and barely cover; the seed needs light to germinate.
  • Germination takes 7 to 15 days at 15 to 20°C.
  • Full sun to partial shade, in moist but well-drained soil; it grows well in containers.
  • Forms a clump about 30 to 40 cm tall and 30 to 40 cm wide.
  • Pick leaves from about 8 weeks after sowing; small white flowers appear June to August. Leaves have the best flavour before flowering, so cut back after flowering for fresh growth.
  • Hardy perennial: dies back in winter, regrows each spring and self-seeds if left to flower.

What you receive: a packet of about 140 seeds from Piccolo Seeds, with growing instructions on the back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is lemon balm perennial?

Yes. Lemon balm is a hardy perennial that dies down in winter and comes back from the roots each spring. Plants stay productive for several years, and lifting and dividing an old clump every few springs keeps it vigorous.

Can I grow lemon balm in a pot?

It is ideal for a pot, which also stops it seeding around the garden. A 25 cm container of multipurpose compost with some grit holds one plant, in sun or partial shade. Keep it watered in summer and cut it back after flowering.

How do I use lemon balm leaves?

Pick young leaves as you need them and steep a handful in hot water for a lemony herbal tea, or add them to iced drinks, fruit salads and sorbets. The flavour fades with drying, so fresh leaves are best. Picking regularly also keeps the plant compact.

What is your returns policy?

We always aim to make sure our customers love our products, but if you do need to return an order within 14 days of purchase (not including plants*), or any items are damaged, we’re happy to help. Just email us directly at hello@growtropicals.com, and we’ll take you through the process.

Please note: we cannot be held liable for any packaging costs should the original packaging be discarded.

*Unfortunately we cannot accept returns of undamaged plants as these are perishable items and are not saleable upon return. If a plant is damaged, we will compensate for this as per our live arrival guarantee.

When will my order arrive and how much is shipping?

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Shipping costs are based on your total order value and will be calculated at checkout, with free shipping automatically applied to all orders over £60. For a full breakdown of shipping prices see our Help Centre.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
