Hoya rafflesia is a large-growing, epiphytic climbing species native to Southeast Asia, known for its substantial foliage and very large, star-shaped flowers. It produces thick, elliptic to broadly lanceolate leaves with a leathery texture and pronounced venation. New leaves often emerge lighter green and slightly softer before firming up and deepening in colour as they mature. The plant grows as a vigorous twining vine, producing long stems that benefit from support such as a moss pole or trellis.
The flowers are among the largest in the genus, typically produced in rounded umbels. Each bloom has strongly reflexed petals in shades of cream to yellow, often flushed with pink or red, and a prominent central corona in deeper red or maroon tones. Mature plants under stable indoor conditions can flower reliably when given sufficient light and warmth, making it perfect for growing indoors in the UK with the right care.
Native to: Southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo, where it grows as an epiphyte in lowland and hill dipterocarp forests. It climbs on tree trunks and branches in warm, humid environments with bright, filtered light.
Water: Allow the growing medium to dry to around 1/3 of the pot depth between waterings. As an epiphyte, it prefers a very free-draining mix such as bark-based compost with added perlite and a small amount of coco coir. Reduce watering slightly in cooler months, but do not allow the roots to remain dry for prolonged periods.
Light: Bright filtered light is ideal. A position close to an east- or south-facing window with sheer curtain protection works well. Avoid prolonged direct midday sun, which can scorch the leaves, though gentle morning or late afternoon sun is usually tolerated. Insufficient light may reduce flowering.
Humidity: Prefers 60–80% humidity for steady growth and bud development. While it benefits from higher humidity, its eventual size and vigorous climbing habit make it more suitable for open indoor spaces rather than terrariums. In typical UK homes, supplemental humidity from a humidifier or grouping with other plants can be beneficial.
Temperature: Thrives in warm indoor temperatures between 18–28°C. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 15°C for extended periods, as growth will slow and root health may decline. Stable warmth encourages both vegetative growth and flowering.

All plants are shipped in their plastic nursery pot unless otherwise stated.
Plant pot sizes can fluctuate +/- 1cm.
We recommend to always size up your decorative pot by 1-2cm larger than the stated plant pot size. For example if you are purchasing a 12cm plant, you should purchase a 14cm decorative pot to ensure it will fit correctly.
We pride ourselves on the love and care with give our plants. Our entire team are plant obsessives at heart and so we go above and beyond to care for the plants we have in stock.
That said, plants are living beings and may differ slightly from the photo provided unless otherwise stated. Small leaf imperfections may be present and won't be compensated for.
Some plants such as Begonia, may suffer slight leaf melt when shipped. This is normal and nothing to be concerned about.
All our plants are stores and/or grown in our nursery under LED lighting so they are in active growth when arriving with you.
The conditions in our nursery are a minimum of 60% humidity and 19C year round.
