Hoya mitrata Silver is a collector's hoya with thick, fleshy leaves heavily splashed and dusted with silver, so each one looks slightly different from the last. Broad, rounded leaves with clear veining are carried on twining stems, and the undersides can flush purple in good light. It is one of the more unusual plants in our Hoya collection, and it has a habit no other houseplant on the shelf can match.
Origins
In the wild, Hoya mitrata climbs through the trees of wet tropical forest from southern Thailand to Borneo and the Philippines. It is an ant plant: mature plants make a second kind of leaf that cups against a branch to form a sheltered chamber, where ant colonies live in exchange for feeding the plant. Indoors it needs no ants at all. This silver leaved form was first traded as Hoya sp. Buntok Silver, after a town in Borneo, before being matched to the species. It belongs with our rare and unusual plants.
Care
Give it bright, indirect light, which keeps the silver markings strong and encourages flowering. Let most of the compost dry before watering, then soak and drain; it is sensitive to overwatering and drops leaves if kept wet. It appreciates humid air but copes with ordinary rooms if the airflow is good. Keep it warm, above 15C. Let it trail from a hanging pot or train it up a small support from our moss poles and supports; it suits our hanging plants equally well.
All plants are covered by our 7-day live arrival guarantee. We pack every order in protective, sustainable packaging designed to keep your plants safe in transit, and every plant is checked before it ships. On the rare occasion something is not right on arrival, we will make it good, provided the plant is still in its original nursery pot.

Flawless leaves, stunning variegation, and clearly cared for by experts. It’s already a talking point in my home office.
Hard to find rare plants that are pet-safe. Ours arrived in perfect condition and looks amazing without any worry.
Hoya mitrata Silver is a houseplant that takes a little effort. It needs bright indirect light, watering only once the compost has dried right through, a little extra humidity and a minimum temperature of 15°C.
A little effort
Bright, indirect light
Bright, indirect light keeps the silver markings strong and encourages flowers. A little gentle morning or evening sun is fine; avoid hot midday sun.
Let it dry out fully between waterings
Water when most of the compost has dried, then soak it through and let it drain completely. It is sensitive to overwatering and drops leaves if kept wet, so water less in winter.
Prefers a little extra humidity
Prefers humid air, ideally 60 percent or more, but adapts to normal room humidity if the air moves freely around it.
Keep above 15°C · Likes a warm room
Warm, ideally 18 to 26C. Keep it above 15C and away from cold draughts and cold windows in winter.
Feed monthly with a balanced fertiliser from spring to autumn, and let it rest over winter.
