Hosta 'Praying Hands' is the most distinctive of all plantain lilies, a hosta so unusual it hardly looks like one. Its narrow, dark green leaves are held tall and upright, tightly folded along the midrib and finished with a fine gold edge, so the whole clump resembles rows of hands pressed together in prayer. Named Hosta of the Year in 2011, it brings vertical structure and a real sense of movement to the shade garden.
It is fully hardy, rated RHS H7, and comes through the coldest British winters unaided. As a deciduous, herbaceous perennial it dies back to a dormant crown in autumn and reappears each spring, the natural cycle explained in our hardy exotics guide. Its neat, upright form makes it one of the very best hostas for containers, where the sculptural leaves can be enjoyed close up.
Water through the first two summers to establish it, then mulch each spring. Praying Hands is a standout in a container from our pots and containers range, an intriguing accent among plants for shade, or a vertical note within exotic border plants. Lavender summer flowers draw in bees, a bonus for anyone growing plants for pollinators. Do note that, like all hostas, it is toxic to cats, dogs and horses if eaten, and slugs and snails will target it, so keep watch as the shoots emerge.
Contrast its upright habit with the broad blue mounds of Hosta 'Big Daddy', or browse the full hardy exotics range. Every plant is nursery-grown, hand-selected for a strong crown and healthy roots, and carefully packed to arrive in superb condition.
All plants are covered by our 7-day live arrival guarantee. We pack every order in protective, sustainable packaging designed to keep your plants safe in transit, and every plant is checked before it ships. On the rare occasion something is not right on arrival, we will make it good, provided the plant is still in its original nursery pot.
Ordering in autumn or winter? Many hardy exotics arrive dormant or cut back right now. This is normal, and the best time to plant.

Arrived just like the photos - maybe even fuller. Healthy, well-acclimated, and straight into my collection with no issues.
Flawless leaves, stunning variegation, and clearly cared for by experts. It’s already a talking point in my home office.
Hard to find rare plants that are pet-safe. Ours arrived in perfect condition and looks amazing without any worry.
Hosta 'Praying Hands' needs partial shade or full shade and moist but well-drained soil. It is very hardy, standing the coldest UK winters outdoors.
RHS H7 · Hardy Exotic · below −20°C
Keep the soil evenly moist through the first two summers, watering well in dry spells, and mulch each spring. Slugs and snails are the usual hosta pest; clear hiding places, water in the morning and use wildlife-friendly controls as the shoots emerge to keep the neat rosette pristine.
Clump-forming
Jul-Aug
Deciduous
Remove faded flower stems, then cut the foliage right back after it collapses in autumn or tidy in late winter; lift and divide congested clumps in early spring.
Toxic to cats, dogs and horses if eaten. Like all hostas, the leaves, roots and flowers contain saponins that can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and general upset if chewed or swallowed. Site away from pets that like to graze, and seek veterinary advice if a pet eats any part of the plant.
