Blue Fescue
Festuca 'Intense Blue'
Blue Fescue
Festuca glauca 'Intense Blue' is a standout selection of blue fescue, chosen for the depth and intensity of its colour, a vivid, almost electric silver-blue that holds remarkably well through the year. Forming neat, evergreen hummocks of fine, needle-like foliage, it's one of the most striking compact ornamental grasses you can grow.
Like all festuca glauca, 'Intense Blue' is brilliant for adding cool colour and crisp, mounded form to sunny borders, gravel gardens, rockeries and containers. Use it in repeated groups for a rhythmic, contemporary look, or let it spill over the edge of a pot or raised bed.
How and where to grow it
Plant in full sun and free-draining soil for the most intense colour and the healthiest growth. It loves poor, dry, sandy or gravelly conditions and resents sitting wet over winter. It's fully hardy and evergreen, asking only that you comb out tired foliage in spring and divide the clumps every few years to refresh the blue.
- Position: full sun brings out the strongest blue
- Soil: sharp-draining; ideal for dry and gravel gardens
- Care: trim or comb in spring; divide periodically
Every plant is nursery-grown and carefully selected, ready to bring a jolt of cool, year-round colour to your garden.
-
It's a Festuca glauca selection chosen specifically for the depth and vividness of its colour, a stronger, more electric silver-blue than many seed-raised blue fescues, and it holds that colour well through the year.
-
Yes, fully hardy (RHS H5) and evergreen, so it provides cool blue colour and neat form all year round.
-
Full sun and free-draining soil. Bright light is what brings out the intense blue; in shade or rich, damp soil the colour dulls and the plant is shorter-lived.
-
Trim or comb out tired foliage in spring, and divide the clumps every couple of years to refresh the colour and keep the plant vigorous.
-
Ideally suited to both. Its drought tolerance and compact, mounded shape make it a natural for gravel, rockeries, dry borders and containers.
