Blue Fescue
Festuca glauca 'Compact Blue'
Blue Fescue
Festuca glauca 'Compact Blue' is a superb little blue fescue, grown for its dense, rounded cushions of fine, steely silver-blue foliage. Evergreen and neat all year, it brings a cool, metallic shimmer to the garden that contrasts beautifully with greens, purples and hot colours alike. As one of the most useful compact ornamental grasses, it's a designer's favourite for edging, repetition and crisp structure.
Its tidy, mounded habit makes festuca glauca ideal for the front of a sunny border, for gravel and rock gardens, for lining a path, or for pots and window boxes. Plant it in groups or drifts for the strongest effect, where the silvery-blue tufts read as a continuous wave of colour.
How and where to grow it
Give it full sun and sharp drainage, the more sun it gets, the bluer the foliage. It thrives in poor, dry, sandy soils and dislikes winter wet, so avoid heavy, soggy ground. Fully hardy and evergreen, it needs very little attention: comb out or trim over tired foliage in spring, and lift and divide the clumps every two or three years to keep the colour vivid.
- Position: full sun for the best blue colour
- Soil: free-draining; perfect for gravel and dry gardens
- Care: evergreen and low-maintenance; divide every few years
Each plant is nursery-grown and hand-selected, arriving healthy and ready to add year-round colour and form to your planting.
-
Yes, Festuca glauca is fully hardy (RHS H5) and evergreen, holding its silvery-blue colour right through winter, which makes it valuable for year-round structure.
-
Give it as much sun as possible and sharp drainage. The more sun it receives, the more intense the silvery-blue; in shade the colour fades towards green.
-
It stays neat and compact, forming a rounded cushion roughly 20-30cm tall and wide, so it's ideal for edging, the front of borders, gravel gardens and pots.
-
Comb out or trim over any tired foliage in spring. Every two or three years, lift and divide the clump and replant the freshest sections to keep the colour vivid.
-
Yes, it's excellent in pots, troughs and window boxes. Use a free-draining, gritty compost and avoid overwatering, as it hates sitting wet.
