Chlorospatha atropurpurea is an eye-catching, rare aroid known for its striking dark purple to nearly black velvety leaves. This plant is prized by collectors for its unique appearance.
Native to: Chlorospatha atropurpurea is native to the tropical rainforests of Colombia. It thrives in the humid understory of these forests, where it receives dappled light and consistent moisture.
Water: Water your Chlorospatha atropurpurea thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of soil has dried out. This plant prefers a consistently moist environment but is prone to root rot if left in standing water. Ensure the pot has excellent drainage and reduce watering during the winter months when growth slows.
Light: This plant does best in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can damage its leaves, so place it in a spot where it receives filtered light. It can tolerate lower light conditions, but this may result in slower growth and less vibrant foliage.
Humidity: Chlorospatha atropurpurea thrives in high humidity levels between 70% and 90%. Using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray with water, or regular misting can help maintain these conditions. This plant is also ideal for terrariums, which provide the necessary high humidity for its optimal growth.
Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 18°C to 26°C for the best growth. Chlorospatha atropurpurea is sensitive to cold and should be protected from drafts and temperatures below 15°C. Keeping it in a warm, stable environment that mimics its native tropical habitat will promote healthy growth and vibrant foliage.
