Description

'Fine Leaf' is a slimmer, more compact chive, ideal for a kitchen windowsill or a patio pot, with the mild onion flavour that finishes eggs, potatoes and soft cheese. Allium schoenoprasum 'Fine Leaf' forms tidy clumps of thin, hollow, deep green leaves that regrow quickly after cutting. In early summer it sends up round pink-lilac pompom flowers, which are edible and loved by bees. Chives are one of the French fines herbes, alongside chervil, parsley and tarragon.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow indoors March to April, or outdoors April to June, in small clumps
  • Depth: 1cm
  • Germination: 10 to 21 days
  • Position: sun or part shade in moist, fertile soil; thrives in pots
  • Height: about 20cm, with a spread of 20cm
  • Harvest: snip leaves from about 8 to 10 weeks after sowing; flowers May to July
  • Hardy perennial: dies back in winter and regrows each spring; divide clumps every few years

Are chive flowers edible?

Yes, the pink-lilac flowers have a mild onion flavour. Pull the florets apart and scatter them over salads, soups and egg dishes. Cutting some flower stems also keeps the plant producing fresh leaves.

Can I grow chives indoors?

Yes, 'Fine Leaf' is well suited to a bright kitchen windowsill. Grow it in a pot at least 15 to 20cm wide, keep the compost moist and cut it regularly so it stays leafy.

Do chives come back every year?

Yes, chives are a hardy perennial. The leaves die back in winter and fresh growth returns in early spring. Lifting and dividing clumps every three or four years keeps them vigorous.

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
