Description

Roman chamomile is the low, creeping perennial that smells of apples every time you step on it, with white daisies for tea from early summer. Chamaemelum nobile forms a soft mat of feathery, bright green foliage topped with small white flowers with golden centres. Pick the flowers in full bloom and dry them for a gentle, sweetly floral tisane, or use them fresh in cakes and desserts. It is just as useful between paving, along path edges or in a herb bed, and the flowers bring in bees.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow indoors March to April, or outdoors April to May and again in September
  • Depth: sow on the surface and press in lightly; the seed needs light to germinate
  • Germination: 10 to 15 days at around 15 to 20°C
  • Position: full sun to light shade, in light, well-drained soil
  • Height: about 30 cm in flower; spread 20 cm or more
  • Flowers: June to August, about 2 months after sowing
  • Lifecycle: perennial and hardy in most UK gardens; trim after flowering to keep plants compact

What you receive: a packet of about 700 open-pollinated seeds from Piccolo Seeds, with growing instructions on the back.

Roman chamomile also features in our Floral Teas seed collection. Browse more seeds for the kitchen garden and plants for pollinators.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I sow Roman chamomile seeds?

Sow under cover in March and April, or straight outside from April to May. A September sowing also works and gives sturdy plants the following spring. Keep the surface moist until seedlings appear.

Can I make a chamomile lawn from these seeds?

Seed-raised Roman chamomile makes a lovely fragrant patch or path edge, and it takes light foot traffic once established. It flowers, so it is taller than the non-flowering lawn form 'Treneague', which is grown from cuttings. Mow or trim it after flowering to keep it low.

Can I use Roman chamomile for tea?

Yes. Pick the flowers when fully open, ideally in the morning, and dry them somewhere warm and airy for a few days. Roman chamomile tea is a little more bitter than German chamomile, so many people mix it with honey or other herbs.

What is your returns policy?

We always aim to make sure our customers love our products, but if you do need to return an order within 14 days of purchase (not including plants*), or any items are damaged, we’re happy to help. Just email us directly at hello@growtropicals.com, and we’ll take you through the process.

Please note: we cannot be held liable for any packaging costs should the original packaging be discarded.

*Unfortunately we cannot accept returns of undamaged plants as these are perishable items and are not saleable upon return. If a plant is damaged, we will compensate for this as per our live arrival guarantee.

When will my order arrive and how much is shipping?

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Shipping costs are based on your total order value and will be calculated at checkout, with free shipping automatically applied to all orders over £60. For a full breakdown of shipping prices see our Help Centre.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
