Begonia maculata (Brazilian Form) is a true species rather than a hybrid or mass-produced tissue culture plant. Grown from seed sourced originally in Brazil. This form is notably more succulent than the commercially available 'maculata' hybrids, with thicker stems and leaves that store more water, making it more drought-tolerant. Its elongated, asymmetrical leaves display silvery-white spots on a light green surface, with pale red undersides.
Native to
Southeast Brazil, particularly within the Atlantic rainforest regions of Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro. This form of Begonia maculata naturally occurs in humid, shaded environments, where it grows as an understory plant.
Water
Due to its more succulent nature, this form of B. maculata requires less frequent watering than the common hybrids. The soil should be kept lightly moist but allowed to dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, as its thicker stems are prone to rot if left in soggy conditions.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate some dappled direct sunlight, prolonged exposure to strong sunlight can cause leaf scorch. A position near a north- or east-facing window is ideal.
Humidity
Thrives in moderate to high humidity but is more forgiving of drier air compared to hybrid forms. A humidity level above 50% is beneficial, though this plant does not require the extreme moisture levels of some other begonias.
Temperature
Grows best in temperatures between 20°C and 22°C. It can tolerate slightly cooler conditions in winter but should not be exposed to temperatures below 15°C. Keep it away from cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.
