Powdery Mildew on Your Houseplants? Here's How to Manage It

Powdery mildew has a rather unfortunate talent for making your houseplants look as though they have taken an unexpected tumble into a bag of icing sugar. That soft, white dusting across the leaves might look harmless, but it is a sign that your plant is dealing with a fungal infection.

The good news is that powdery mildew is rarely fatal to indoor plants, particularly when caught early. With the right treatment, you can get your plant back on track, while a few simple changes to its growing conditions can help keep that tell-tale white coating from making a return.

What Is Powdery Mildew?

Powdery mildew is the common name for a group of fungal pathogens that produce a white or grey powdery coating on leaves, stems, and sometimes flowers. The pathogens belong to the order Erysiphales, with different species attacking different host plants. Unlike many fungal problems, powdery mildew thrives in warm, humid air with poor circulation rather than in soaking wet conditions.

Life Cycle of Powdery Mildew

The fungus produces airborne spores that land on a leaf surface, germinate, and send fine filaments (hyphae) into the outer leaf cells to extract nutrients. Visible powdery growth is the fungal mycelium and the next generation of spores ready to spread. A new cycle can complete in 7 to 10 days under ideal conditions, which is why a small patch can cover a whole plant within a fortnight if conditions stay favourable.

The implications for treatment are simple. You'll need to kill the visible mycelium, lower humidity around the plant, and improve airflow. Otherwise, you will be back to square one as soon as the next batch of spores lands.

Identifying Powdery Mildew

Physical Characteristics

Look for small, round, white or pale grey patches on upper leaf surfaces. As they grow they merge into a dusty coating that you can wipe off with a finger (it comes back). Affected leaves often turn yellow, distort, or drop. New growth coming through infected tissue can emerge stunted or curled.

Where to Look

Powdery mildew appears most often on the upper side of leaves, but check both surfaces. It also colonises stems and flower buds. Plants growing in crowded conditions, in shaded humid corners, or next to a wall with poor air circulation are the most likely victims.

Which Plants Are Most Susceptible

In our experience, the houseplants we see hit hardest by powdery mildew are Begonia, African violet (Saintpaulia), Kalanchoe, Jade plant (Crassula ovata), and certain succulents in damp bathrooms. Damage Caused by Powdery Mildew

Powdery mildew does not kill houseplants outright in most cases, but it reduces photosynthesis where the fungal coating blocks light, weakens the plant over time, distorts new growth, and makes the plant a more attractive target for opportunistic pests. Heavily infected leaves can drop, and severe infections on flowering plants like African violets can ruin a bloom cycle entirely.

How to Get Rid of Powdery Mildew

Immediate Steps

Isolate the affected plant from your other plants. Move it to a separate room if you can. Remove the worst-affected leaves with clean secateurs and bin them, do not compost. Wipe down nearby surfaces and shelves to remove fallen spores.

Improve the Conditions

Powdery mildew cannot get a foothold without warm humid stagnant air. Move the plant to a brighter spot with better air movement. A small desk fan running for a few hours a day on a low setting around your plant collection makes a real difference. Lower the local humidity if possible. Do not crowd plants on a shelf; give each one space to breathe.

Natural and Cultural Treatments

A milk spray (one part full-fat milk to nine parts water) applied weekly is a well-evidenced home remedy and is enough for mild infections. Bicarbonate of soda (one teaspoon in a litre of water with a drop of washing-up liquid) also works on light infections, applied as a fine spray to both leaf surfaces.

For more advanced cases, Vitax Yellow Sulphur is a traditional and effective treatment. Sulphur disrupts the fungus directly and discourages reinfection. Use as directed and avoid spraying in bright direct sun.

Neem oil also has antifungal properties on top of its better-known use against insects. Pepin cold-pressed neem oil applied weekly until the powdery growth is gone, in combination with improved airflow, will clear most infections within 2 to 3 weeks. Apply with a dedicated pressure sprayer for even coverage.

Targeted Fungicides

If natural treatments do not clear the infection, a targeted fungicide is the next step. FungusClear Ultimate 2 Concentrate or the ready-to-use FungusClear Ultimate 2 spray are certified for organic gardening and specifically rated for powdery mildew. Follow the dilution and frequency on the bottle exactly. Two or three applications, spaced as directed, are usually enough.

Prevention

Once you have had powdery mildew, you will know how easily it spreads, so prevention is worth real effort. Keep plants well spaced, run a fan for circulation, and avoid letting susceptible plants stay damp at the top of the compost. Water at the base, not over the foliage. Healthy plants resist mildew far better than stressed ones. One last note: if you keep getting powdery mildew on the same plant despite treatment, it is almost always an environmental issue rather than a fungus problem. Move the plant, increase airflow, and review whether the spot suits it. The fungus is the symptom; the conditions are the cause.
