Description

Wormwood is the silver-leaved herb behind absinthe, and a tough, drought-tolerant perennial that brings soft, feathery grey foliage to a dry, sunny border. Artemisia absinthium forms a bushy mound of finely divided, silvery-green leaves with a strong, bitter aroma, topped in late summer by sprays of tiny yellow flower heads. It is at its best in gravel gardens, herb borders and Mediterranean-style planting, where its pale foliage sets off purple and blue flowers. All parts are toxic if eaten, as the plant contains thujone, and the foliage can irritate sensitive skin, so wear gloves when handling it and keep it away from children and pets.

  • Sow indoors February to April, or outdoors April to June
  • Depth: sow thinly and barely cover, no deeper than 5mm
  • Germination: 7 to 21 days
  • Position: full sun in well-drained, even poor, soil; it dislikes winter wet
  • Height: up to 90cm, with a spread of 60cm

Frequently Asked Questions

Is wormwood safe to grow?

It is safe to grow as an ornamental, but all parts are toxic if eaten because the plant contains thujone, and the foliage can cause skin irritation in sensitive people. Wear gloves when handling or cutting it, and plant it away from where children and pets play.

Is wormwood perennial?

Yes, it is a fully hardy perennial that comes back each year and becomes woody at the base. Cutting it back in spring keeps the growth silver and compact rather than leggy.

Can I grow wormwood in a pot?

Yes, a pot at least 30cm wide and deep suits it well. Use gritty, free-draining compost, place it in full sun and water sparingly, as wormwood tolerates drought far better than wet roots.

What is your returns policy?

We always aim to make sure our customers love our products, but if you do need to return an order within 14 days of purchase (not including plants*), or any items are damaged, we’re happy to help. Just email us directly at hello@growtropicals.com, and we’ll take you through the process.

Please note: we cannot be held liable for any packaging costs should the original packaging be discarded.

*Unfortunately we cannot accept returns of undamaged plants as these are perishable items and are not saleable upon return. If a plant is damaged, we will compensate for this as per our live arrival guarantee.

When will my order arrive and how much is shipping?

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Shipping costs are based on your total order value and will be calculated at checkout, with free shipping automatically applied to all orders over £60. For a full breakdown of shipping prices see our Help Centre.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
