Description

Brighton Rock is an old-fashioned snapdragon mix whose flowers are splashed and striped in two colours, so no two spikes look quite alike. Antirrhinum majus 'Brighton Rock' carries dense spikes of the classic hinged flowers in blends of red, pink, yellow, cream and soft pastels. It is a reliable cut flower, lasting well in a vase, and the bumblebees love it: they are heavy enough to prise the petals open. Grow it in borders, cottage-garden planting or a pot on the patio for colour from early summer to autumn.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow indoors February to April at 15 to 20°C, or outdoors April to May where it is to flower
  • Depth: sow on the surface and press in lightly; the seed needs light
  • Germination: 10 to 21 days
  • Plant out in late May once frosts are over, 25 to 30 cm apart
  • Position: full sun, in any reasonably drained soil
  • Height: about 45 cm; spread 45 cm
  • Flowers: June to October; cut back after the first flush for a second
  • Lifecycle: grown as a half-hardy annual; may overwinter in mild, sheltered gardens

What you receive: a packet of about 1,500 open-pollinated seeds from Piccolo Seeds, with growing instructions on the back.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I sow snapdragon seeds?

For the earliest flowers, sow indoors from February to April and plant out in late May. You can also sow directly outside in April and May for flowers from midsummer. Do not cover the seed, as it needs light to germinate.

Are snapdragons good cut flowers?

Yes. Cut the spikes in the morning when the lower flowers are open and stand them straight in water. The upper buds keep opening in the vase, and regular cutting encourages more stems.

Will snapdragons come back next year?

Snapdragons are short-lived perennials usually grown as annuals in the UK. In a mild, sheltered garden plants often survive winter and flower again, and they self-seed freely if a few spikes are left to set seed.

What is your returns policy?

We always aim to make sure our customers love our products, but if you do need to return an order within 14 days of purchase (not including plants*), or any items are damaged, we’re happy to help. Just email us directly at hello@growtropicals.com, and we’ll take you through the process.

Please note: we cannot be held liable for any packaging costs should the original packaging be discarded.

*Unfortunately we cannot accept returns of undamaged plants as these are perishable items and are not saleable upon return. If a plant is damaged, we will compensate for this as per our live arrival guarantee.

When will my order arrive and how much is shipping?

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Shipping costs are based on your total order value and will be calculated at checkout, with free shipping automatically applied to all orders over £60. For a full breakdown of shipping prices see our Help Centre.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
