Description

Common sage is a kitchen staple that doubles as a handsome evergreen shrub, with soft, velvety grey-green leaves all year round. Spikes of violet-blue flowers appear in early summer and are popular with bumblebees. The leaves have a warm, savoury flavour for stuffing, pork, squash, beans and brown butter sauces, and crisp beautifully when fried. Salvia officinalis is hardy and drought tolerant, suiting a sunny herb bed, a gravel garden or a large pot by the kitchen door.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow indoors March to May at 15 to 20°C
  • Plant out after the last frosts, or sow outdoors in a seedbed in May
  • Sow about 0.5 to 1 cm deep
  • Germination takes 10 to 21 days
  • Full sun in light, well-drained soil; it dislikes winter wet
  • Grows to about 60 cm tall and 40 cm wide
  • Pick lightly in the first summer; flowers in early summer from the second year
  • Hardy evergreen perennial; trim lightly after flowering and replace woody plants every four or five years

Is sage perennial?

Yes. Common sage is a hardy, evergreen perennial shrub that keeps its leaves through winter in most UK gardens. Plants become woody and sparse after a few years, so it is worth raising replacements from seed.

Can I grow sage in a pot?

Yes, in a pot of at least 30 cm with gritty, free-draining compost. Stand it in full sun and water only when the compost has dried out. Avoid saucers of standing water in winter.

How long do sage seeds take to germinate?

Usually 10 to 21 days at 15 to 20°C. Keep the compost just moist and give the seedlings plenty of light so they stay sturdy. Pot them on individually once they have their first true leaves.

What is your returns policy?

We always aim to make sure our customers love our products, but if you do need to return an order within 14 days of purchase (not including plants*), or any items are damaged, we’re happy to help. Just email us directly at hello@growtropicals.com, and we’ll take you through the process. 

Please note: we cannot be held liable for any packaging costs should the original packaging be discarded.

*Unfortunately we cannot accept returns of undamaged plants as these are perishable items and are not saleable upon return. If a plant is damaged, we will compensate for this as per our live arrival guarantee.

When will my order arrive and how much is shipping?

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Shipping costs are based on your total order value and will be calculated at checkout, with free shipping automatically applied to all orders over £60. For a full breakdown of shipping prices see our Help Centre.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
