Description

Green Eyes swaps the usual dark centre of a black-eyed Susan for a soft lime green cone, which makes the golden petals glow. Rudbeckia hirta 'Green Eyes' carries large, warm yellow daisies on sturdy stems from midsummer until the first frosts, and they last well in a vase. Bees and butterflies use the flowers through late summer, when many plants are fading. At around 60 to 75 cm it fits the middle of a border, prairie-style planting or a large patio pot.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow indoors February to April at 18 to 21°C
  • Depth: sow on the surface or barely cover; do not exclude light
  • Germination: 7 to 21 days
  • Plant out from late May once frosts are over, about 30 cm apart
  • Position: full sun, in well-drained, moderately fertile soil
  • Height: 60 to 75 cm; spread about 40 cm
  • Flowers: July to October; deadhead for more blooms
  • Lifecycle: short-lived perennial usually grown as an annual; hardy, and often self-seeds

When should I sow rudbeckia seeds?

Sow indoors between February and April for flowers the same summer. Keep the trays light and warm, prick out into small pots, then plant out in late May once frosts have passed.

Is Rudbeckia Green Eyes perennial?

Rudbeckia hirta is a short-lived perennial, usually treated as an annual. Plants may come back for a second or third year in well-drained soil, and they often self-seed.

Is Green Eyes the same as Irish Eyes or Prairie Sun?

All three are green-centred forms of Rudbeckia hirta. Green Eyes is sometimes sold as Irish Eyes, while Prairie Sun has petals tipped in pale primrose, so it looks a little different.
