Rhodotypos scandens, the black jetbead, is a tough deciduous shrub with crisp white four-petalled flowers in late spring and early summer, followed by glossy jet-black berries that hang on into winter. The flowers are 3 to 5cm across, the berries come in clusters of up to four from late summer, and the opposite, sharply toothed leaves turn yellow in autumn.
The berries are poisonous. They contain amygdalin, a cyanogenic glycoside, so keep children and pets away from them and wear gloves when handling the plant.
Rated H5, it is hardy to -15°C and needs no winter protection in the ground. It copes with sun or shade, which makes it a useful choice among our plants for shade, and its berries add to a garden of winter interest plants. It forms a bushy shrub of about 1.5m each way.
What you receive: a plant in a 17cm / 2L pot.

RHS pruning group 1 or 2. Little routine pruning needed; after flowering, cut out a proportion of old, weak shoots to keep it young and open.
Harmful if eaten. The black fruits contain amygdalin, a cyanogenic glycoside; NC State rates the poison severity high and the RHS lists it as potentially harmful (fruit ornamental, not to be eaten; wear gloves). Keep children and pets away from the berries.
